There are few icons in the boating world like the baby Avon, indeed the 4m Searider is credited with being the first commercially produced RIB.The original boat created an aura around her as being a little boat with huge seakeeping abilities. The Avon stories of rough-water passages could fill a book, such as the circumnavigation of Scotland in one by Michael Alexander and Richard Frere in 1989. This one voyage changed the way people thought about boats for ever Nimble and quick the original boat was, driving very spiritedly over boats’ washes without backing off, this little boat takes anything you throw at it and just shrugs it off. She scoots onto the plane immediately For anyone who wants a small boat that is easy to tow, launch, recover, store and is cheap to run, the Avon Searider 4m is one of the best. It is a small boat; the original seating for two was stripped out before my time, but has proven to be very useful indeed.
For a little boat she can give big pleasure, and adventuring away with a tent to wild-camp in areas that others only dream about, there is nothing that can compare. The closed foredeck provides somewhere to store lightweight cargo, such as clothes and sleeping bags, and the open hull is suitable for heavier items in dry bags lashed in place, but then that was the whole concept of RIBs in the first place: rough and ready to go anywhere. I’ve owned her for about 7 years, and she’s never put a foot wrong. I’ve used her primarily as a Coaching Boat (brill for working alongside dingies), a Safety Boat, and a Training Boat - I’ve lost count of the number of PB2 certificates and Safety Boat certificates that have been earned in her. She’s worked hard, is no longer a “looker”, holds air very well, and is dependable.
Trailer has new tyres, wheels, hubs, bearings and mud-guards - all just fitted, so keep an eye on re-greasing the hubs. Marina 15 outboard is quite adequate, pushes her well, gets on to plane easily with 4 adults on board, and is docile at low speed. It had been bolted on to transom, but I prefer to transport it separately. Package includes 4 Plastimo Storm Adult size Buoyancy aids which are new and never opened (except one to photo) - these assist self-righting of the wearer, but they are NOT LIFEJACKETS A 3.5kg folding grapnel anchor is included; about 2ft of 8mm chain is attached but there is no line. (remember - deploy 5 to 7 times water depth of 8mm 3-strand nylon or polyester line)
