NORTHERN NANCY - a 43 foot narrowboat built by Springer in 1973. Permanent mooring in Manchester - only £150 per month. *New 4 year Boat Safety Certificate issued next week* *Engine serviced and all batteries replaced August 2020* *New boiler installed August 2020* *Hull blacked September 2019* I bought Northern Nancy to live on whilst I was working in Manchester. Sadly I've been made redundant so I no longer need her. I've had the most amazing time living on her and doing her up and she'll be sorely missed.
Entering the boat from the stern you'll enter the engine room. She's got a Lister engine that's currently being fully serviced. She's also got two brand new dual purpose (starter and cruiser) batteries. The engine rooms a great size and perfect for coal and wood store. I also use the room as my tool cupboard and also have a couple of boxes for storing my winter clothes.
You then enter the main living room / kitchen. There's a cracking multi-fuel burner in the corner that was more than sufficient to keep the whole boat toasty all winter. There's a wall mounted 45" flatscreen TV, a dining table and a sofa. The previous owners had a sofa bed in this room so the boat can be turned into a 4 berth again if needed. The kitchen is made out of a 1940's formica kitchen sideboard.
I bought the sideboard from a lovely woman in Yorkshire. She told me the sideboard belonged to her mother "Northern Nancy" who had bought it in the 1940's and had baked 1000s of cakes on it. She was so moved that I was taking the sideboard to re-purpose it as a kitchen that I decided to rename by boat in her honour. Lots of videos of Northern Nancy can be found on Youtube - with a regular appearance of the sideboard https://www.youtube.com/watch? V=DZFTl9EzOyI The kitchen also houses a new electric oven with two electric burners on top.
I also have a portable two ring gas hob that I plug in when I'm out cruising. Going further into the boat there's a shower room with a brand new (August 2020) Cointra gas boiler, shower and Porta Potti cassette toilet. In the hall there's a large cupoard where I house my 12v fridge freezer. Above this there's ample wardrobe storage for all of my clothes. At the bow of the boat is my living room / bedroom.
I've installed a long sofa that can be used as a single bed, or pulled out into a full sized double. The bed lifts up and has lots of useful storage space underneath. The room also has a large bedding box. The bedroom opens out onto a bow deck, big enough to store two chairs and a small table. A perfect spot for working your way through a bottle of wine.
Northern Nancy comes with a permanent mooring at Droylsden Marina, Manchester (subject to 5% transfer fee to marina). The marina houses 30 boats and most are permanent residents, meaning there's a real friendly, community vibe (beer O'Clock is 5pm on the dot every day). The marina costs are £150 per month (the cheapest I've found) and this includes costs of water, a brand new shower and toilet block (with a regular cleaner). There is also commercial laundry facilities. Electricity comes from the boats own hook up.
I probably put on no more than £10 per month. The marina is 200 yards from Droylsden Tram stop which is only 4 stops away from Manchester city centre. Alternatively it's a 40 minute walk along the tow path into the city. In the opposite direction we've got lots of country walks, with Daisy Nook Country Park a 5 minute drive away. Alternatively it's a 4 minute walk from Northern Nancy to The Silly Country, a great craft beer bar.
Works to do: The exterior of the boat was repainted in August 2018. She still looks good but if I was keeping her I was going to get her taken back to the metal and repainted. I have a quote of £1,800 from a boat painter that lives on the marina. The electrics on the boat are more than sufficient for being on the marina. But she probably needs a small solar panel if you're planning on taking her out for longer cruises.
She's a great boat and perfect for a permanent liveaboard or as a holiday boat. The pictures really don;t do her justice so viewings at Droylsden Marina welcome anytime.
