Engine Make: Yamaha
"Catch Penny" - An Atlanta Catch 22 Sailing Boat For sale is our much loved 1985 Atlanta Catch 22. She is a 22ft Sailing boat in wonderful condition throughout and with exceptional accommodation for her size. The hull was repainted in March 2017 and she was anti fouled at the same time which you can see in the picture of the boat hoisted up. She has been kept in Poole harbour this year and seen regular use throughout the summer. She has now been lifted out for the winter and is blocked off at Ridge just outside wareham in Dorset.
Rigging and SailsShe has a conventional sloop rig and standing rigging is all in good condition. Genoa sheets come back to great condition Lewmar winches and there are a further two smaller winches mounted on the cabin roof for the mast lines. Running back to the cockpit are main halyard, topping lift, kicker and an genoa halyard. The genoa is on a Furlex 50s furling system while the main has a two stage slab reefing system installed. Catch Penny comes supplied with the following sails2 x Mainsail - Sailcover for when fitted to boat1 x Genoa (approx 4 years old and new sacrificial strip in 2017)1 x JibCatch Penny features a swinging keep which is lifted using a winch in the cockpit.
The keel can be seen in the picture from March this year when she was above to be launched. The swinging design is a great feature and means that she will float in 0.8m of water, allowing you to keep up the shallowest creeks to anchor up for the night. However once in deeper water you can drop it down for the best sailing performance. Hull and TopsidesThe hull was repainted and restriped with new name and port decals on the back at the start of 2017. She is a dark blue colour and was painted with international yacht enamel.
She was also anti fouled in 2017 as you can see from the picture of he hung up being launched at the start of this season. The anti foul remains in tact but you might want a top up before 2018 to get the best performance. The top sides are nice and clean all over the boat and feature guard rail running all the way around as well as nice large good quality mooring cleats with two on the bow and two on the stern. The cockpit floor was repainted at the start of 2017 as well so that is also in excellent condition. There are also spray dodgers on to be attached on the guard rails either side of the cockpit which really help to make this a very dry boat even in heavy weather.
EngineCatch Penny has a long shaft Yamaha 8hp outboard engine mounted in a centrally positioned inboard well directly forward of the rudder. This configuration unlike many port or starboard positioned wells means the thrust from the prop runs directly over the rudder and means the boat is extremely manoeuvrable under power. The engine is a 2002 model, was serviced earlier this year and has proved to be extremely reliable. Always starts on the first pull and being 8hp has plenty of power for a boat of this size. Being both well mounted and long shaft it also has extremely good performance with very little wake.
The engine is connected to a 20litre stainless steel fuel tank which is integral to the boat and having a deck top mounted filler means that keeping topped up is incredibly easy and also that no cockpit space is taken up by the normal external tanks. The line to the engine also had a new fuel filter this year as well. Yet another benefit of this excellent engine is that is features the 6amp charing circuit output. The engine is connected through "dri-plug" connector to the boats 12v battery and keeps it charged up year round. We have never had to charge the battery during the season at al this is kept fully charged by the normal engine use you would expect on the boat.
With this configuration of engine in a well, charging and integral fuel tank you get all of the performance and convenience benefits of an inboard engine, but with the fantastic ability to remove the engine single handed. This drastically cuts down on servicing costs and security during the winter months when the boat is ashore. ElectricsThe boat has a single 12v battery stored in the main cockpit locker. This feeds via a main isolator switch to a six way switch board in the cabin providing individual circuits for the different electrical systems. All of the electrics are tested and fully working.
They include the following:Nasa Clipper Duet Log/Depth UnitCobra Marine DSC VHF Radio with cockpit repeater speakerCabin lights throughoutFront and rear Navigation LightsMasthead LightSteaming Light12v Socket2 x USB Charging socketsBluetooth / USB / FM Radio with two speakers and remote controlCockpit mounted AutoHelm power socketThe Nasa Clipper Duet log/depth unit is mounted on a swinging panel which can be pulled across the companionway when under weigh and then swung round out the way when not required. This panel also features the repeater speaker for the VHF radio. The stereo system with great quality speakers in the cabin was installed in 2017 and proved to be a great addition. It even has bluetooth handsfree and remote control so you can change the music from the cockpit! Cobra marine DSC radio is also fully tested and working perfectly.
The socket for the Autohelm is located next to the engine well and is switched from the fuse panel so you can turn it off when out of use. The boat has the auto helm included and it is a Raymarine ST1000, I used this several times this year and it was extremely useful. There is also a copy of the user manual onboard so you can familiarise yourself with it fairly quickly! There are two large cabin lights in main saloon and then a smaller reading type light in the forward cabin / v-berth. A 12v socket is mounted by the switch panel as well as a pair of 2.4a fast charging USB sockets.
AccomodationThis is one of the real ace's for this boat. She can sleep up to four people with two in a double V-Berth at the front and then two on the bunks in the main saloon. The forward cabin can also be separated off with a curtain from the main cabin area. This provides two separated cabin areas which is treat on a boat of this size. The upholstery is all in good condition for its age and is now off the boat to be kept warm and to avoid any damp while she is ashore.
The forward cabin has a good quality and water tight window hatch in it chichis a nice way to get a fresh breeze through the cabin and gives loads of light. The windows in the main saloon are also in perfect condition. There are no leaks in the cabin at all, even after the heavy rain we have had over this season she has always been totally dry inside. There is a 4 year old Thetford Porta Potti Cube chemical toilet fitted on the boat. Obviously much simpler than a sea toilet this has proven to be a very simple and convenient way to have a toilet onboard.
Additional equipment also includes an ENO two burner gas stove, supplied by an external gas cylinder mounted at the very stern of the boat. This was fitted at the start of 2017 and is in immaculate condition and fully functioning. This is mounted next to a small sink which has a hand pump tap fed from fresh water tanks until the port side berth There is storage shelves all on along both sides of the cabin and under bunk storage in both the main cabin and the v-berth. This provides an enormous amount of storage. Entering the main cabin through the companionway there is a two stage hatch system above the conventional washboards (re-varnished 2017).
Once the main hatch is slid back you can then open a hinged additional hatch and remove the first section giving you really large entrance way and head height, but also a nice way to get more light and air in when anchored up on a summer day. The headlinings were new fitted in 2017. The cabin also has two fire extinguishers and a fire blanket. Cockpit EquipmentThe cockpit is well equipped with the the Nasa Clipper Duet Log/Depth unit and a compass mounted in the cabin wall. There are two lifebelts with U-shapped brackets to mount them on the back of the boat as well as a pole to hang an ensign on.
The tiller can be tilted up to access the engine well top. There is also a boom tent if you get weathered in somewhere and want to extend the interior accommodation. There is a manual bilge pump and a complete engine cover to lock away the engine. Under the starboard side of the cockpit is the main cockpit locker. This contains all the usual cockpit locker items such as lines, fenders, main 12v battery, fuel funnel and so on.
It's surprisingly deep and makes for great storage. Mooring and AnchorageShe comes with a full set of good quality mooring lines, four fenders and is equipped with an anchor connected with 10m of chain and a further 15m of rope after that. The anchor and chain are in a dedicated anchor locker on the fore deck. There are excellent quality large cleats forward and aft and fairleads in all positions. SummaryI have tried to include as much detail as I can for you in this description as there are lots of boats on here and I am aware people purchasing in this price bracket have plenty of choice.
However I think Catch Penny is one of the best boats of this size I have seen in a long time. Great quality accommodation combined with compact size, easy single handed sailing and a great history of being maintained and treated well make this a fantastic option for anyone looking to buy a boat of this size. We have really enjoyed owning her and in truth the only reason for the sale is to try and get something a little larger to accommodate my family as the children grow up. We have really enjoyed sailing around Poole and the Solent in her and I am sure she will make someone a fantastic boat for 2018. As I have mentioned she is currently ashore in Ridge just outside Wareham in Dorset.
I would be more than happy to meet up with any interest parties down there and I can talk you through the finer points. You can always message me though classifieds board or call me on 0phone for any questions and I would be happy to answer. I have lots more pictures as well which I can send over. If you are interested in the boat then providing the full asking price is paid we are happy to cover the cost to have the yard either lift the boat on to your trailer or back in to the water so you can sail her away. If not then the storage fees will become the new owners responsibility from an agreed date at the point of sale.
To keep it at Ridge is around thirty pounds per week and they have excellent facilities.
