CONSTRUCTION - GRP hull, deck and superstructure – moulded by Macbar of Poole to Lloyds 100A1. Fitted out by Hinks of Appledore Hull – solid GRP with clear gelcoat, white gelcoat above the waterline. Below the waterline, the hull was stripped back to the gelcoat in 2010. There were areas of high moisture content with some wicking visible, but no blistering was found. It was then coated with epoxy, followed by CopperPlus antifouling, some of which has since flaked off.
The hull has now been repainted with primer and antifouling. Deck and superstructure – off-white gelcoat with balsa core, overpainted in recent years with International “Toplac”, which now needs re-painting. Non-slip areas were originally covered with “Treadmaster” sheeting, small areas of which had badly worn. This has all been removed and is awaiting renewal after repainting of the coachroof, etc. Ballast – cast iron, encapsulated.
Woodwork – teak hatches, teak capping on the raised bulwark, teak windscreen surround, hand-rails and dorade boxes. Well executed internal woodwork in teak-faced ply and solid teak with pine carcasing. Deck Hardware – Stainless steel pulpit, stanchions, guardrails and pushpit with hardwood corner seats, stainless steel stemhead with twin rollers, large mooring bollards and fairleads, Lewmar genoa tracks and cars. Simpson Lawrence electric windlass, deck fillers for fuel, fresh water and pump-out. Stainless steel 3 part folding transom ladder.
Lewmar deck hatch over galley area, stainless mushroom vents over heads. Solar-powered extractor fans in stainless domes in fore-hatch and lazarette hatch. Rig – Sparlight gold-anodised masts (tabernacle stepped) and booms. Mast steps to both masts. Stainless steel rigging renewed in 2005, Hood headsail furling gear with twin luff grooves.
2 Gibb genoa sheet winches, 2 halliard winches. Sails – white – in good condition with ‘stack-pack’ covers for main (Technique Voile) and mizzen. Engine – Mercedes OM314 4 cylinder 65 hp diesel engine fresh water cooled through heat exchanger, approx. 8000 hours. Regularly serviced and reliable.
Top end overhaul 2005. Fuel consumption approx. 0.75 gals/hour at 1200rpm giving about 6 knots and 1000 mile range subject to conditions. . Borg Warner gearbox to shaft drive and 3-blade propeller. New cutlass bearing 2010.
Morse engine single lever control. Shaft brake. Whitman rod steering with teak wheel. Salt water deck wash. Electrics – 24 volt electrics– CAV 60 amp alternator reconditioned 2013, 250amp alternator reconditioned 2014 with new Transpo Electronics, Inc.
V2400 regulator. Avel-Lindberg HC100-24-12PT 12 volt 10amp dropper for electronics. Shore supply socket in cockpit feeding 240 vac circuit – Sterling 2425CED digital 25amp mains charger, Isotherm immersion heater for hot water calorifier, and 240vac sockets in cabins. Vetus 3.5hp bowthruster. Tanks – Fuel 2 x 70 gallon steel tanks; Fresh water 2 x 50 gallon steel tanks; Holding tank – believed 40 gallons (not connected to forward heads at present).
Hot water tank. Pressurised ‘Flojet’ hot and cold fresh water system, hot water heated from engine or immersion. Accommodation – semi-enclosed centre cockpit with fixed windscreens, canvas side and rear screens for complete protection when needed. Helmsman’s position with all controls and folding seat. Ample stowage, easy access to engine bay under floor.
Isotherm seawater cooled freezer unit for large freezer locker under forward port seat (needs re-gassing). Saloon giving dinette (occasional double berth), Refleks diesel heater, galley area with twin sinks, gimballed Plastimo Neptune 2000 gas cooker with 2 burners, oven and grill. Hanging locker. Ample stowage. Separate heads fitted with Lavac marine toilet, handbasin and shower.
Headroom approximately 6’3”. Forward cabin giving 2 good-sized single berths, steps to forehatch, ample stowage. Aft cabin giving double and single berths, wardrobe, drawers and ample stowage, separate heads fitted with Lavac marine toilet and handbasin. Large lazarette in stern, access through deck hatch. Gas locker with drain overboard.
INSTRUMENTATION – Sestrel steering compass, Neco autopilot, Midland DSC VHF, Walker wind instruments, Autohelm echo-sounder, Raymarine C70 radar and chart-plotter, Garmin GPS 128, NASA Navtex, gas detector. DECK EQUIPMENT – 45lbs CQR and fisherman anchors, approx. 65 metres 3/8” galvanised chain, mooring warps, springs and fenders, aluminium passerelle, emergency tiller, horseshoe lifebuoy and strobe light, boathook, spinnaker pole, navigation lights, GPS aerials, Airmarine wind generator mounted on mizzen mast, foot switches for windlass, 24 volt horn, deck wash, 4-man Life Raft in canister (last serviced 2010). SAILS – genoa (furling), mainsail, mizzen sail, cruising chute, all in good condition. INSIDE – Cushions and curtains throughout in good condition, radio/CD player, TV aerial, hand-held compass, interior lights, lee cloths to all berths, dry powder fire extinguishers in each cabin and one in cockpit locker, automatic fire extinguisher in engine bay, clock and barometer, connections for SSB radio, connections and ducting for Eberspacher-type heating.
OWNERS’ COMMENTS – ‘SPIRIT OF LUNDY’ – ATLANTIC 40 KETCHThe original owners kept the boat on a river mooring in North Devon until 1995, and during their ownership they cruised mainly on the South Coast, with three years in the Mediterranean. The second owners sailed to the Canaries before going on to the Caribbean. They stayed for four years going through the Islands to Venezuela, Columbia and Panama before returning to Spain. In 2002 they crossed the Atlantic again to Tobago and Trinidad before returning to the Canaries. In November 2005 they crossed to Tobago before returning to the UK.
They were caught in Hurricane Delta in 2005 for three days, but were never in trouble, and found ‘Spirit of Lundy’ to be “a very, very safe yacht”. WORK DONE SINCE 2008 SURVEY – ‘SPIRIT OF LUNDY’ – ATLANTIC 40 KETCHHULL – antifouling stripped to gelcoat, coated with epoxy and Copperplus antifouling, since primed and antifouled. RUDDER – re-sealed to reduce water ingress. BOW THRUSTER – antifouling cleaned to give clearance, no electrical fault evident in use. STERN TUBE – hose and gland checked, jubilee clips replaced.
SKIN FITTINGS – all checked, some replaced with bronze fittings. DECK – rusty components removed, Treadmaster removed ready for replacement. HATCHES – forehatch and lazerette hatches rebuilt. WINDSCREEN AND WINDOWS – windscreen opening centre section replaced, sliding ports removed, re-anodised and rebuilt with new seals and fastenings. EXTERNAL WOODWORK – bulwark capping damaged areas removed and replaced, all refurbished and varnished.
DECK FITTINGS – stanchion fastenings replaced, davits removed and new pushpit fitted. WINDLASS – rebuilt in 2009 MAST – main boom replaced with slab-reefing. RIGGING – some running rigging replaced, rope purchased ready to replace halliards, etc. SAILS – genoa, main and mizzen all replaced with good second-hand white sails with boom covers and lazy-jacks. ENGINE – checked over by qualified engineer, Jabsco saltwater pump rebuilt with new seals and impeller.
STEERING – emergency tiller tested, stored in lazerette. INTERNAL STRUCTURE – distortion monitored, chain locker extended to allow chain stowage. INTERNAL FITTINGS – internal upholstery re-covered, new curtains fitted. VENTILATION – Lewmar hatch fitted over galley, solar extraction fans fitted to fore-hatch and lazerette hatch. SEA TOILETS – tested afloat, pumps serviced.
SEACOCKS – all checked, some replaced, serviced and new clips fitted. FRESH WATER – new faucets fitted to galley and basins. GAS INSTALLATION – gas bottles removed to new gas locker within lazerette with drain overboard, new flexible hoses fitted, system checked. ELECTRICS – all batteries replaced, alternators rebuilt, faults traced as evidenced, shore power checked, new 240/24 volt 25 amp charger fitted, new 24/12volt transformer fitted. BILGE PUMP – new electric bilge pump fitted.
FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT – 4 dry powder extinguishers fitted, new automatic extinguisher fitted in engine bay.
