Built in 1970 by Mackays of Arbroath, Scotland, 'May Queen 1V' is a larch on oak traditional trawler. Decommissioned in 2008, this impressive former fishing boat has recently undergone extensive work to convert her into a unique live aboard and is currently moored on a beautiful residential mooring in Torpoint, Cornwall (Plymouth Sound / River Tamar). I brought this boat across the Irish Sea to Cornwall from Kilkeel in 2011 and since 2012 I have been living on board whilst converting her from a fishing trawler into a houseboat. She is currently moored on the Cornwall side of the River Tamar on a residential mooring with an enviable view across the estuary.
After 6 unforgettable years as a boat dweller I have taken the decision to sell; having recently gotten myself engaged it is time for a new adventure! Until very recently, 'May Queen 1V' was known as 'Albacore', but during the renovations her old name was discovered carved into the wood and so I decided to return her to her former name. She will always be 'Albacore' to me, but a new/old name seemed fitting for a new life with a new owner. Since she came into my possession in 2011, 'May Queen' has undergone something of a transformation. The former fish hold (below decks) with its impressive oak ribs, has been cleaned out, sanded back, waxed and polished.
The once very dirty bilges were also painstakingly cleaned out. It is something of a talking point to tell friends that I sleep in a fish hold, but this is now the bedroom and bathroom area. There is also a cosy woodburning stove fitted for cold Cornish evenings (which served very well in the quest for turning my girlfriend into my fiancé!) A solid, hand crafted staircase has been fitted to take you from the bedroom into the bespoke kitchen which has been uniquely and painstakingly built to fit the space. Housing the kitchen area is the aluminium shelter deck, now fully weatherproof with a 'front door' and a 'back door' to keep the elements on the outside and thus creating a sizeable two-story living space. At the rear of the boat are the additional spaces of the former galley, the wheelhouse and the 6 berth bunk room.
All the traditional wooden decks are in excellent condition and were repaired and caulked using traditional methods in 2013-14. In September last year, 'May Queen' was taken out of the water and treated to a complete de-barnacling(!), a rigorous clean, caulking, repair, anti-foul and new anodes. Do check out the photos to see some of this in progress. She has since, over the winter, undergone a transformative, extensive and meticulous restoration and repainting from the top down, including the removal of all the old paint, repairs to boards and the thorough preparation of all surfaces prior to painting. This includes the wheelhouse which has been restored to the traditional wood effect she would have had when originally built.
There is still some work to be done and I am still living and working on her full time, but all the seriously difficult repairs and restoration have been completed, leaving only a few jobs such as cosmetics and plumbing. There is a bathroom suite inc. Bath, sink and WC in situ which just needs to be plumbed to be finished. All repairs have been meticulously carried out and 'May Queen' is now an impressive sight within the boat yard. 'May Queen 1V' really does need to be seen to be appreciated.
