THE DOWNSIDE OF TECHNOLOGY... For more picture of the rebuild please visit the website www.thomasdugganstudio.com and scroll to the bottom of the page entitled 'boatbuilding' For those of you that know boats you will know the best materials are Teak, Bronze and Lead...This one was a custom build for the famous Kelvin Hughes designed by the very well respected Frederick Parker. Built at one of the best yards at the time Sandbanks in Poole. She is incredibly strongly built with steam bent English oak frames at 7" centers with 3/4" carvel teak planks. Both the frames and planking are original and as new.
The floors are galvanised steel 7/8" x 3/8" at throat. They are in very good condition. She has two stringers of silver spruce 3"1/5" moulded x 1"1\5" sided..shelf of silver spruce 4" x 1"1/5" sided...as you can see an incredible build quality. The planking, king plank, cabintop, cabin sole Stem, Sternframe, transom, coamings, hatches, rudder are 'carefully selected of finest quality, reasonably reasoned, and free from knots of the finest Burma Teak. She was built under the protection of a shed under Llyods 100A approval.
Keel bolts are Bronze, removed in 1986, found to be perfect and replaced. The mast and boom are solid Silver Spruce and in very good condition. All planking is copper fastened and are is excellent condition. The top sides being splined in teak. The decks are new Lloyds specification 15mm waterproof glue plywood from Robbins Timber.
Newly and expertly installed in 2014, Fibre-glassed West- System and entirely sealed. Beta Marine installed new and professionally in 2008 with new Vetus exhaust. She starts on the button, with no smoke, is very quiet and economical. I have changed the oil twice a year as it is so easy to do and cheap. A new oil filter, impeller, and alternator belt fitted last year.
I bought a secondhand 'Technique' sail for her 3 years...a £1000 sail new..it is in good condition with new slides (as was rope) put on and fitted to rig on purchase. Interior is finished in natural Japanese Oak. There are fitted cupboards either side. The steps down in to the galley can be removed of easy access to engine, as can the cockpit floor. Full standing headroom in the galley which is rare in a boat of this size.
I am 6ft 1 and no problem to stand.. There is a stainless steel fresh water tank holding about 17 gallons. It is custom made and fits the bilge under the floor, supplying the Royal Dalton ceramic sink. Fuel tanks are new and located at the stern. All rigging was done new and professionally in 2012. She is rigged in 6mm stainless steel with twin fore and aft stays...one forestay being snap release.
She has a powerful rig with tall mast and is fast under sail..she has 1 3\4m tonnes of lead keel and is therefore very comfortable in rough seas and handles like a much bigger boat. I have done 7.5 knots in her and was comfortable. She has a 5'6" draft, is 28 over the deck and 25' at waterline. She has beautiful lines and has been built with incredible care and attention. She needs a bit of tlc to bring her in to the next season but is a boat worth spending time and money on.
I have spent a huge amount of time, skill and love on this yacht. I have owned her for 7 years now. She has a plough anchor with calibrated 8mm chain. A new Diesel Taylors Stove / heater which heats the cabin really well and is bulk head mounted. All through hull fittings were renewed before I bought her..not that they needed doing only as a precaution and good practice.
They were found to be like new (made from Bronze). A marine grade SS bow fitting has been fabricated a fitted professionally to a very high stardard..Teak detail around this SS fitting to protect the deck...this is to aid anchoring, especially when she was sailing in the med. She has been to the med a few times, via gibraltar and returning through the french canals. I have a huge amount of history that came with the boat. She is part 1 registered, an RORC measurement certificate or historic interest, engine manual, original specifications by Sandbanks Yacht Co.
Photographed by Beken of Cowes on her maiden voyage skippered by new owner K.R.Huges founder of 'Kelvin Huges' navigation equipment. I have the original bill of sale and has been owned by 6 owner prior to me. 3 of which were of the same family. She is a wonderful boat and I have enjoyed owning her and improving her over the last 3 and a half years..she needs a little time to bring her up to speed but is a boat of beauty and great history. The main things that need doing are new Winch posts made up.. I have the orignial.. they are slightly corroded at the base.. I have all the winches, which could do with stripping and greasing.. I hope this helps.
Please email me if you have any questions or would like to view her. The rebuild has been photographed in detail. There has been no expense spared during the rebuild and I have all the receipts. A huge amount of time, everyday for 8 months, and money has been spent on the boat and it is just in the process of being finished but I am now moving abroad. Summary: The boat is made of best Burma Teak throughout.
The hull was taken back to wood and found to be in immaculate condition. The planking is carvel, copper fastened, keel bolts are bronze. The decks have been completely replaced with Lloyds marine 15mm ply screwing using ‘new-old-stock’ knettlefold silicon bronze screws then fiberglass sheathed using WEST SYSTEM. This has been done to an exceptional standard, all joints are lap-jointed, and all the edges are sealed..in fact the decks are completely encapsulated with West System Epoxy. The hull has been re-caulked and seamed in traditional red-lead putty.
The engine is a Beta Marine only having done a few hundred hours since 2008 and in excellent condition. It has been out, re-sprayed, everything replaced with stainless steel..all new piping, new fuel tank, everything is new and the best quality. The wood has been stripped back to bare wood meticulously inside and out, prepared then coated with 4 coats of Primocon then 4 coats of Danboline in the inside and 4 coats of Primocon on the outside. The interior has been stripped back to bare wood with 6 new coats of varnish being applied. The boat really has to be seen to be fully appreciated.
The boat is currently on some hard standing where it is being completed. Viewing is very welcome at any time. There is full history with the boat with the original bill of sale, architects plans, previous owners, many receipts and signed Beken photograph of maiden voyage. I would be incredibly sad to see the boat go but a change in my personal circumstances has made it available. For seriously interested parties please be in contact and I can send many more photographs.
I have a very detailed set of photographs because nearly everything in and on this yacht has been restored over the past few years. She is currently on some hardstanding outside my workshop and will need a Hiab to lift and transport her. Asking price is £6000.. looking for a quick (ish) sale... WE HAVE DECIDED TO REDUCE THE ASKING PRICE AS WE ARE RELOCATING TO ITALY IN THE SPRING AND SADLY CAN'T TAKE THE BOAT WITH US. PLEASE NO SILLY OFFERS!! THIS HAS BEEN THE PRIDE AND JOY OF THE FAMILY OVER THE PAST 7 YEARS... I have now had a lot of interest..some having seen the extent and quality of work and insist she is worth more than my reduced price...For more pictures of the rebuild please visit www.thomasdugganstudio.com scroll to the bottom of the page under heading boatbuilding... £4500.00
