Engine Make: Beta Marine
Country/Region of Manufacture: United Kingdom
Paean is a FULLY RESTORED AND READY TO SAIL classic sailing yacht. Built in 1961 by David Cheverton & Partners, Isle of Wight, she is a strong, seaworthy family cruiser. We bought Paean in 2010 in need of TLC which we provided during a refit that took 3 winters (with summer sailing in between). Everything that needed to be done was done, including hull works, new Beta marine 14 engine, new standing and running rigging, new sails, electrics, electronics and lots more. All technical work was done by professionals.
There is a full list of work completed and a full survey dated 2013. Paean is a great family cruiser, but can also hold her own in classic races. She has been regularly entered Cowes Classics Week Regatta, Round the Island Race (classics under 9m) and last year raced against (as in lost to) Sir Robert Knox-Johnson, at the inaugural Hamble Classics Regatta, run by Royal Southern Yacht Club. I had expected to keep Paean for many more years, but due to family illness I have decided to put her up for sale at a very reasonable price. I know there are lots of boats on here that are “projects” and I can assure you that Paean is not a project in any way.
As you would expect, there is the usual maintenance that comes with boat ownership, mostly a bit of painting and varnishing, but you could jump on board and sail Paean away today to anywhere you wanted to go. Berthing at Ocean Village marina can be arranged. Interested parties are welcome to view in Ocean Village marina, Southampton, by arrangement. She is setup for single-handed sailing with most lines fed back to the cockpit, but can be sailed with up to four people on board.
New Genoa, Main, stack-pack and cover, 2013. Number 1, 2 and storm jibs, plus full size classic shaped spinnaker (age unknown and never used). The cockpit, which was completely rebuilt by ex-Moody shipwrights in 2012, has plenty of space for four adults to sit in comfort. There are two large lockers with storage for fenders, etc. In the cockpit, you also have a Compass, Nasa log (currently unused), Nasa Depth and NASA GPS Repeater.
There are also halyard bags, which can double up as somewhere to store a tablet for navigation. There is an auto-pilot – Simrad Tiller Pilot TP100 which makes life easier when single handed sailing. Inside, there are 2 cabins separated by curtain. In the main cabin, there is a seating / dining area with period fold down tables, that also doubles as 2 fixed berths and in the fore-peak there are two full length hammocks. These hammocks will fit an adult and we cruised for extended periods with three people on board. A forth adult could be accommodated at a squeeze (2 children would fit easily).
There is also plenty of space to stow clothes, etc. A Jabsco twist and lock head (toilet) is installed in fore-peak, with Simpson Lawrence (“Blakes” style) seacocks. There is a 12 v system throughout, with lights in the main and fore cabins. The main cabin also has 2 old style paraffin lamps, which produce both lighting and heat for chiller evenings. To port there is the galley with Origin single burner stove, sink and cold water hand pump tap.
Plenty of storage for crockery etc. Also, plenty of space for the bar and other supplies! To starboard, there is a chart table with room for full size charts and plenty of places to stow pens, pencils, binos, handheld radio, compass, etc (not included). There is a stereo radio / CD player (unused) and 12v socket which can be converted to a USB point, so that you can charge phones, tablets, etc. For navigation / communications, a Garmin GPS provides position information (also relayed to the cockpit) and there is a fixed Standard Horizon VHF/AIS receiver (installed 2015).
We also use a tablet with Navonics chart software (not included). There is a shore-power connection, leading to a 240v double socket in the main cabin, which can be used to run fan heater or dehumidifier, etc (not included) when in port over the winter. There are two batteries. One is a dedicated to engine starting, the other is a 1 x110 leisure battery, wired with a 1-2-All switch with connection to a CTEK 240V battery charger. Although, simply running the engine to get in and out of the marina is enough to keep the batteries charged in the summer.
A new Beta Marine 14HP engine was installed 2013, with new everything from water inlet seacock to shaft and propeller. There is a manual bilge pump that can be operated from the cockpit and also a 12v auto bilge pump installed. Tankage: 20L diesel fuel tank and 10L water tank.Nav lights: Lowers, steaming and tricolour.Paean has a set of covers to protect her over the winter. Paean is a must-see boat – you really can get in and sail her away to anywhere you wanted to go. She is sea-kindly, safe and secure.
I would trust her to handle anything that is thrown at her. It is with genuine sadness that I must sell her, but due to family illness, she has to go. If you want a classic boat, that turn heads everywhere you go, come and see Paean.
