Here we have Northern Lass, my Colvic Northerner 27 (they are variously described as 26ft or 27ft). These boats are well known for their good seakeeping ability in challenging northern UK coastal waters (hence the name Northerner). I bought her for £6000 in 2016 at a mooring in an Essex engineering boatyard (see final photo). The previous owner was a fastidious retired Royal Navy submarine engineer and the boat was still in the original high quality build layout, with the BMC 50hp diesel engine starting on the turn of the key and running cleanly, having had just 10Hrs running time since a major overhaul. She has 2 permanent berths (forward V berths) and can accommodate 2 berths in the saloon area.
Galley and separate sea toilet. She has 1079 nautical miles on the clock, that equates to just twenty five 8hr cruising days at 6knots. Max design speed is 8 knots. She has been lying ashore since 2016 when I commissioned the following work to be undertaken by the boat yard, at a cost of circa £4,500: Original undamaged gelcoat hull was buffed, polished and antifouled.New shaft seals fitted and screw polished.New electric bilge pump fitted.New rudder constructed and fitted.New running lights mast constructed.Wheelhouse floor beams, flooring and roof removed and replaced with new (roof now marine ply with white epoxy coating). All external woodwork on hull and wheelhouse sanded down and two coats of marine grade dark varnish applied.Wheelhouse internal woodwork varnished.Engine serviced (new oil, filters and belts)Two new heavy grade batteries fitted.Bespoke stainless steel frame and removable waterproof cover manufactured for deck area at rear of wheelhouse.Wheelhouse control panel removed, to be modernised. My plan was to finish her in time for my retirement at age 60 in 2023 and then sail or transfer her around to a berth at Anglesey in North Wales (I live in North West England).
However, post Covid, I have now had to commit to work until I am 65, and hence I am reluctantly selling Northern Lass. Work I was planning to have undertaken to finish her (prior to Covid happening) is as follows: New control panel manufactured and original instruments replaced and re-connected.Wiring re-connected to windscreen wipers and mast running lights. One wheelhouse starboard side window shows signs of seeping, it needs sealing and resultant staining inside wheelhouse needs re-sanding and re-varnishing. Various re-commissioning activities on engine, fuel system, galley, sea toilet etc... If you Google Colvic Northerner you will see that these boats are used as coastal cruisers and inland/canal boats, with clean examples selling between £12,000 and £14000. Mindful of the work done and relatively small amount of work to finish Northern Lass, I believe my asking price of £8,750 is fair. I am willing to discuss sensible offers.
I will cover the cost of yard fees until end of 2022 if the full price is paid. Having decided to sell, I now want to see Northern Lass go to an owner who will finish her and enjoy her for years to come. For any questions or more information (I can't possibly cover it all here) or further photos call me on 0phone. Note: the above mentioned work was undertaken in the yard workshop where hourly work rates and storage rates are very competitive. Northern Lass is now in the yard on a hard standing and covered in tarpaulins.
I can arrange viewings via the yard owner for any serious prospective buyer (highly recommended). Serious enquiries only please (genuine classifieds boarders will understand). I work days and will reply to any queries asap (work allowing). Thanks.
