Last year we spent over £1000 refitting her History: KINSMAN is a 26 foot Eventide auxiliary yacht, sail number YME638, built by Jones and Teague at Saundersfoot, Pembroke, in 1965, and registered at Grimsby. She was British Part One registered with official number 304799. Her registered tonnage is 2.76. Air Vice-Marshal Sir Alan Boxer, her first owner, apparently fitted out some parts of the saloon and cockpit. She was registered as number 19 in 1966 at Grimsby.
The Certificate of Registry shows that she was sold to Mr. C. J. Stokes of Shirley, Southampton, in November 1973, and again in January 1974 to Mr. J. F. W. Perrin, of Westcliff on Sea, Essex.
J. T. McMenamin Esq., owned her from July 1988 to 2003 and carried out an extensive refit, involving some new ply skin panels, regalvanising bilge keels, new galvanised keel bolts and epoxy coating of the hull. The refit was reviewed and accepted by Captain K. Millett of Bureau Maritime. The original engine was replaced by an inboard diesel engine, and Mr. P.
Sporle, C Eng. F. I. Mar. E., M.R.I.N.A., M.C.M.S. Of Leigh on Sea, Essex surveyed its installation. There have been other improvements to maintain and improve the vessel. The gap between the keel and the skeg has been filled in with iroko timber, retained by bronze bolts and sheathed with epoxy, to reduce weather helm.
Various survey reports on KINSMAN are available. Changed name to the Funky Floater in 2012, with the rudder and skeg replaced in 2017, all rigging and hull inspected in 2017. The Eventide: was popularised by Yachting Monthly in 1962 and designed for building in plywood by their famous editor, Maurice Griffiths. The much-loved Eventide 26 is a slightly larger version of the original Eventide 5 tonner. Over 2000 Eventides have been built worldwide.
As a group of friends we have owned and loved this boat for around 10 years. We have had many good trips with her reaching as far as St Marlo. Like most boats at this time of year she will need a few things looks at. From memory the following needs looking at: the hatch cover needs refitting the old one we removed as it was rotten. I have formed from hardwood but it just needs paining and re fitting.
Currently we have been screwing plywood to secure the cabin. We re applied anti foul around April last year but i think the weed might be building up.The cockpit might need sanding and painting in places. The fuel tank needs draining and checking. We have been using a small fuel can to ensure contaminated water has not been getting to the engine. The engine was running really well in Jan but when i went down last week i was unable to get it started. Maybe needs more battery power or jets cleaning. I am sure would start with a few squirts of easy start. We did however fit a outboard bracket so she can be moved easily enough. We fitted a bow sprite last year (not needed but we always wanted one) a cable needs securing to the bow.The main sail is getting a bit baggy and could do with replacing. We did a bit overhaul last year and the Recent works completed:We fitted a new rudder and skeg.
We used stainless steel rather than the painted mild steel previously used. This was machined specifically for the boating costing in excess of £700.Painted the hullpainted anti foulpainted the deckServiced the enginefixed various hinges on hatchesOther notes:She has a full set of sails including furling Jib/Genoa, main sail, spinnika, storm jibShe comes with a GPS and auto helm. However there is a power issue and is untested. It was working end of last year. She comes with a large anchor and chain.Various other parts, fixings and spares. She has gas but the cooker was unfortunately stolen! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or if you ant to view her.
She is currently on a swing mooring just off Northney marina. This can be transferred if required (circa £1000 a year). We will need payment within 5 days. She can be viewed 5/5/18 if required. We cannot provide a survey
