Glad Tidings is a fifie sailing lugger built in 1897 by James Weir in Arbroath. She is 45ft long 14.5ft beam and 5ft draft. I bought this boat sunken in Kent in 2015 to save it from being broken up. After gutting the boat between tides and using temporary measures to keep her afloat I put an engine in her to motor her to Suffolk. Once at our local yard I used my stock of oak, larch and greenheart to extensively re-frame and re-plank below the water line.
I have replaced the stem, apron, keel section and keelson and bilge stringers. She was good and dry after the work considering the condition she was in when I found her. Much stronger and was able to be lifted. She was painted up just to smarten her while lying against the quay at the yard. The paint is somewhat shabby now as this was only meant to be temporary as I knew a lot of the topside planking would be replaced in the next phase of the restoration.
Unfortunately for the boat that time never came as my life got too busy with other things and I'd exhausted my timber supply. I decided it was time to let someone else finish this stunning vessel as she deserved to be sailing once more. I had several people interested over the past year or so but no one being able to see it through. Often the cost of hauling the boat by road being a big factor for most. At 14ft beam she needs an escort so the haulage adds up.
She could be moved by sea by someone with the know how and correct skills required as that's how I brought her back and in a lot worse condition than she is now. There are more photos and information on her to be found on the national historic ships register, certificate number 2056. Also an advert on findafishingboat ad number 115132. She needs to be gone from where she is in a months time. So I am open to any offers for her as she needs to go.
However I'm not going to just give her for free as I've put a lot of timber time and money into her and need to see something back. Otherwise I may as well use the timbers to build something else as wood is expensive. It would however be a real shame to have to dismantle and lose this stunning piece of sailing history so fingers crossed someone will love her once again. Please only get in touch if you have an idea of where you can take her, how to transport her and the costs involved as I don't have time to waste. Please message me through classifieds board initially.
