Freeman 22 Mk 2 Narrowbeam 4 Berth Cabin Cruiser

‘April the First’ aka simply ‘April’ is the name of my Freemen 22 Mk2 1966 cruiser moored on the beautiful River Wey in Surrey.Shes 22 ft long 6ft 10ins wide and has a Ford 105E Watermota inboard petrol engine. April has been out of the water every few years with the last lift in January 2018 during which the hull was painted and antifouled by Bridge Marine Shepperton. At the same time the engine was fully serviced and overhauled, including replacing head gasket, impeller and core plug. I have a detailed invoice from Bridge marine for this work costing £750.00. Late last year I replaced the distributor cap and points.

Shes running really well. Externally Aprils is in decent shape too. The cockpit cover made by Jeckels is about 6 years old and in good condition although the bungee cords are beginning to lose their elasticity. Inside the living area there is a double burner hob, grill, sink and portable loo (within its own compartment) and a second separate forward area converts quickly and easily to a double bed. A further double bed can be made up in the living area using the table.

The seating covers are original (apart from one rogue which has been temporarily recovered) and although perfectly serviceable its true to say they are looking just a little tired. The only real issue April has is that being 44 years old the rubber in some of the window seals is getting a little hard and allowing some water ingress especially on the forward port (left) window. I’ve used some mastic to temporarily fix the problem although renewing the rubbers is something a competent DIYer could tackle.She has a current Boat Safety Certificate which runs out in April 2022. Shes not a complex boat and sailed through the simple checks last time and I’ve no reason to think she won’t do so again.As lovely as April is please see the photos of the beautiful National Trust mooring shes berthed at. This is near the village of Ripley in Surrey just a few miles south of the M25 so easy to access from any part of London.

The mooring is accessed via a path across a field from a private farm track so there is no traffic noise here just the sound of birdsong and the cattle lowing. Bliss! This non-residential mooring is transferable to the new owner for £200 and the fees are £322 per quarter. I’ve paid this quarters mooring fees which last until the end of June so bear in mind there are up to £200 worth of mooring fees included in the price.April is ready to go for the coming summer season in which sadly, holidaying might not be as straightforward as it has been in recent years.
