Freeman 25, Converted To Electrical Power

"Patience" is a standard Freeman 25, which had its worn out petrol engine professionally replaced with a powerful Etec electric motor, which is an American made, by Briggs & Stratton, under licence, a copy of the British made Lynch motor, and drawing its power from standard lead acid traction batteries. The motor operates at 50 volts, and is controlled by a 4QD controller, recently serviced. There are two sets of batteries, each of which can give about 5 hours cruising at Broads speeds, and there is a set of solar panels to keep the batteries charge topped up. She has two mains chargers, one automatic, so both sets of batteries could be charged at once if required. The batteries have "conditioners" fitted, and are expected to have another 4 to 5 years life, provided they are properly looked after, i.e kept fully charged.

This system gives near silent operation, without the diesel noise, or any petrol smell, and at a cost of around 75 pence for a days cruising, its very clean in use. No need to carry petrol or diesel fuel, and of course no fuel tanks, or holes in the hull for cooling water. The Broads Authority encourage electric power, and give reduced river tolls, and insurance costs are also lower. Other than that, the boat is just like any other Freeman cruiser, being 4 berth, with Porta Potti toilet, gas hob, the usual washing and food preparation areas. She was lifted last year, when some of the pictures were taken, antifouled, the hull and deck professionally repainted and the windows professional removed and resealed.However, she does need the whole cockpit area scraped, and revarnished, and new floor covering in the cockpit.

The only other area of damage is a small area inside where the veneer has lifted due to the now resealed windows leaking. The canopy was overhauled last year, but it is in dire need of a clean. She has the usual equipment. Patience is moored on what I consider the best Broads location, and the mooring, which can be transfered, is paid to end Dec 2017, Broads Authority river fee paid to end Mar 2018, and the Boat Safety Certificate valid until April 2020. There are local boat yards should you want to move her to another area.
