STOP PRESS! This is now an auction! Sold 'as is'. Firstly, reason for selling is a change of circumstances (posted overseas with my job). I bought 'Amazon 111' approximately two years ago, with the intention of a singlehanded trip around Britain and Ireland.
Subsequently, I spent a lot of time looking for the right boat and then worked on her, so that she was ready for the job. Sailing yachts of the seventies have always been passion of mine, not least because this was the era of change from timber to GRP and the traditional lines and build quality (thickness of hull and internal strengthening such as stringers) means they were far tougher than modern 'factory' built items. But, it is not easy to find a traditional, seaworthy boat from the era that has been maintained regardless of expense without all the usual problems. There are so many boats on the market which are described as 'good condition for age' or 'needs minor work'. So, a lot of time was taken in finding Amazon 111.
She proved to be everything I was looking for: including a strong rig with an additional forestay for a storm jib, and a powerful diesel that can even be hand-started. I have a very large history file, which contains invoices for the work carried out and items replaced, which is actually more than my original asking figure. Over £7000 spent in recent years, plus time used! Halcyon 27. Designed by Alan Buchanan, developed from the Crystal 27 (originally timber) and then moulded by Thames Marine and built by Offshore Yachts International.Around 150-180 were built and a number were used for training by combined services (hulls were always red).
Renowned for seaworthyness, performance and build quality. (Lots of Altantic crossing and at least one circumnavigation). Dimensions: Loa 27ft. Lwl 20.3ft. Beam 7.8ft.
Draft: 4ft. Dispacement: 3.048 metric tons.Keel: Lead fully encapsulated. Sail area: 292 sq ft. Fuel tank cap: 10gals. Fresh water tank cap:15gals.
Ballast ratio 50%. Headroom: 6ft 2ins. Engine: Bukh Dv20 twin diesel. Electric and hand-start. Runs very smoothly.
A very powerful engine. BUT PLEASE NOTE: Dynastart needs a service. It should be removed and taken to a specialist to fit new brushes etc. Although I can assure you that the BUKH runs very well, with no smoke or oil use at all, she will NOT electric-start at this stage and hand-start from cold is not something I can do. Overview: Built in 1975, therefore probably one of the last.
All gel coat is original and never been painted. All anti fouling professionally stripped, replaced with International and checked for any osmosis. There was none (see photo). No scrapes or damage under the waterline. Hull and deck in excellent, presentable condition, very smart and useable.

On berth in Penarth Marina, paid up until end of March 2017. It's on a very nice berth and Penarth Marina is very efficient and good value (12 months berthing, shore lay-up whilst carrying out work and car parking etc was £2300 in 2016/2017, but any period from 3 months onward can be taken out). I'm very reluctant to part with her (and some of my other items!) but if not, she'll be unused over the next few years, and that just won't do. In my opinion, she is an exceptional example of a great class of boat. I don't believe another Halcyon 27 in this order could be found available.
She was bought and then fitted out for a long-distance cruise I no longer am able to make. Someone is going to get an opportunity. She is on sale at a figure that is very reasonable, especially given the work, new equipment and overall condition. All that is required is bending on the sails, stowing equipment and casting off. I am planning another site listing and also a broker, but given the commission involved, the asking figure would be higher.
Just wanted to let you know that she is likely to be on sale elsewhere. I would consider a sensible offer for a quick sale. I'm on board her in Penarth this Saturday (28th), so any specific, additional photos I can take for you then. Please let me know by text message your email address, so that I can forward you more photos, as I am limited to just 12 on classifieds board. Update: I have been aboard (27th January) after a couple on months, and everything fine and bone-dry.
Engine ran fine as expected, only issue was starter (dyno). UPDATE: The Dynastart is now NOT engaging (04th February).I do have a spare unit that goes with her, but would need refitting and I am not going to do it; just wanted to let you know I've also changed a few photos to show condition of interior, also taken on 27/01. PLEASE NOTE: My work commitments are taking up all of my time before going overseas, so I have something of a dilemma! Subsequently, I am now selling at AUCTION ONLY and best bid wins. Start figure low but if not exceeded, is the sale figure.
Also, PLEASE READ and be clear on all updates above. Also, berth included until end of 1st April, and I'll see if my insurers can give you a switch over till next October at no extra cost. All available inventory now onboard. Sold as seen. Bank transfer please (no Pay Pal) within 24 hrs of sale.
