Hamilton Jet Boat J72 Thunderball (1969)

This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of history. This boat was built in the Hamilton Jet factory at Christchurch, New Zealand in 1969. Hamilton claim to be the first to produce the water jet propulsion for use in boats. It was number 22 of 23 J72 Thunderball’s built. It gained it name from the fact the hull design was used in the Thunderball movie.

The boat was designed in the US for Beuhler Corp who resold the jet units in the US and Hamilton as part of the deal built the boat in New Zealand for the local market. Some of these boats made their way abroad. There is a cutting from a magazine of the time in the photos that talks about its entry into the market and its capabilities. I came across this boat in a very poor state a few years ago in the Peak District and have completely restored it back to its original condition. There are bits and pieces that still need doing but in the main it is complete and very usable.

The engine is a 327 Chevy converted by Crusader and according to Hamilton, is the original engine. It has just been rebuilt (detail available) with less than a few hours running. The jet is the original 3 stage unit also having been rebuild with little use. The trailer is in very good condition. The boat is parked in Sandbach, Cheshire where it can be seen.
