Historic classic wooden 'jolly boat' launch tender admiralty spares or repair Here is a rare opportunity to own a piece of Maritime history that would make a fantastic day boat, launch or tender when restored. A real piece of historyThis boat is currently located at a boatyard in Tonbridge, Kent and was built in c.1953 as a Jollyboat. An almost identical boat, which is reputed to be the sister boat to this has provenance to show that it was hung on the port side of the Royal Yacht Britannia and was decommissioned in the 1980's when they were replaced with GRP Jollyboats.Whilst we have no documentary evidence that this boat is associated with the Royal Yacht Britannia, she has her original Admiralty markings including the arrow inscribed in her and is extremely well built. All of which would suggest its provenance as a naval tender. The boat has sat unused for a number of years but seems remarkably solid.
She is constructed of double diagonal mahogany with canvas between. She holds rainwater and appears in very sound condition, just some deterioration to the top combings, deck, etc. All relatively simple to fix. So would be well worth lavishing some attention on as these types of boat are rare and very sought after. She would originally have had Perkins P4M with Centrifugal Gearbox and would have had a top speed of about 20 knots to keep up with the Royal Yacht Britannia or similar. She still has intact many of her original admiralty bronze fitments.
Drain ports, water inlet, and exhaust port, stern tube, propeller guard, rudder mountings, etc.She is also equipped with davit points where she would have been hung on a ship such as the Royal Yacht Britannia. These could possibly be used as cranage points when lifting her out but care and thorough assessment would be needed. We have found a rudder that is possibly from the boat as it is very similar and is included in the saleShe is 27ft x approx 8ft and weighs approx 2 tonnes. The boat needs full restoration, so please check photos carefully. But as it is part of history and it would be well worth restoring These boats were very well built so definitely worth lavishing some attention on and at the end of the day they make a good investment. There is no trailer and at present, the boat is situated near a slipway in the boatyard. It is possible that she could be craned out of the yard which is situated down a bank.
But a large hiab lorry should be able to do this. Or she could possibly be towed upriver from the slipway and onto a public access slip if she was made watertight first - ie blocking up prop shaft hole, water drain points, etc. So to sum up a great opportunity to purchase a real historic classic boat in need of restoration. Would make a great classic day boat perfect for the Thames, inshore waters, or would be great if it went to a museum so it could be enjoyed by everyone, etc Grab a bargain.
