Description:
For sale is my Hunter Legend 23.5 Trailer Sailer. What a fantastic boat this is. We've used it for family sails mainly on Windermere. Back in 2016, the previous owner lost the mast in a storm. As a result of his insurance claim, she was fitted with a new mast and standing rigging. So, unlike most boats of this age, she's not on original rigging but on relatively new rigging. The boat was surveyed in 2017. This is important as many insurance companies are looking for a survey within the last five years. The Hunter Legend 23.5 benefits from a water ballast system. Basically, once you launch the boat, you open a valve and a tank in the base of the hull fills with water. This takes just a few minutes. The benefit of this is that you are able to tow a lightweight boat to the slipway, but have a well ballasted boat on the water. The trailer is also fitted with guide poles at the rear. This makes for a simple launch and even simpler recovery. The foresail is in reasonable condition benefitting from a roller furling system with the line led aft to the cockpit. The mainsail is also in reasonable condition and this too has the main halyard led aft to the cockpit. The main sail has one reefing point which from experience is very useful once winds reach over 16-18kts. The cockpit features bespoke made cushions making for a more comfortable sail. And with all lines led to the cockpit, you can safely sail without climbing up on the foredeck. When not under sail she is powered by a Tohatsu Sail Drive outboard motor with Morse Controls in the cockpit and an external fuel tank. The Sail Drive is more than powerful enough to maintain hull speed even in a reasonable breeze. Electronics: She is fitted with a VHF radio (in need of a new aerial which is currently on order). She also has a log for speed and distance through the water. Unlike most trailer sailers, she is fitted with a mast raising system. You can look this up online or on YouTube. There is a pole that clips into the base of the mast and you use the main sheet block and tackle to lift the mast. The effort needed is very little, this could be done by a young teenager. I'll happily demonstrate lifting the mast to whomever purchases the boat. Trailer: Last year I overhauled the trailer. I fitted a brand new Alko hitch to the same spec.As the original including new braking unit and handbrake. I fitted new brake cables (to the hubs from the centre distributor), I used the more expensive stainless steal ones rather than the rust prone standard ones. Bearings were also replaced, again, I bought the best I could find (over £100 for the set) rather than the online £20 ones. The tyres were getting old so a new set of tyres were fitted, I also bought a spare wheel (hadn't had one up until then) and had a new tyre fitted to that. The trailer has only seen water once since the work was completed in fresh water.Inside: The cabin is light and airy. The headroom is low, my 10-12 year old children can stand up, I'm 5'11" and bent over. Despite the height, with good levels of light coming in it feels spacious. There is a cool box and portapotty included and cushions to the V-berth and seats. Unfortunately I don't have cushions to the rear double (these wouldn't cost much to have made). We've never slept on board, just used for day sails. There is a gas cooker, however, I've never used this. I'm not a fan of gas on board with an old cooker so have always used a camping stove outside. Overall: you are looking at a boat in reasonable condition. It's not perfect. There are some areas of the hull that have brushed a jetty and you might choose to make some small repairs. The inside is reasonable but there are some stains on the seat cushions. I will be replacing the VHF aerial in the next week, and will also check over the electrics (there's an issue with the main isolator that I need to resolve - I work in electronics so not a major issue). The main points, however, are that this boat comes with a survey, has relatively new standing rigging and has a trailer that is fully serviced and ready to tow hundreds of miles without issue. I do have a couple of jobs to do before she goes.I am conscious, however, that she might take a little while to sell. I have therefore listed her now and will finish the small jobs over the next couple of weeks. I am not available for viewings over the bank holiday weekend as I'm sailing my new boat back from Swansea to Pwllheli. I am, however, available for the subsequent weekends and can do many evenings. I have listed as a classified advert as I'd like whoever is interested in her to come and view her first. She's not perfect (she's 25 years old!), but she's not bad. I'm open to offers close to the asking price, especially for a prompt sale. Reason for selling: I've loved sailing her, however, I'm ready to set sail further afield. I've already bought a bilge keel Westerly sailing boat which is a much more sea going vessel. I'm hoping to cruise to the IoM and Ireland, something that would be a bit of a stretch for my Hunter. The Hunter 23.5 is an amazing starter boat or a cost effective way of enjoying the water for anyone. Trailer sailing is much more cost effective as you can store her on land, she's currently in a caravan storage place costing less than £250 per year.
