Kestrel 22 sailing yacht for sale. Beautiful example of the Kestrel 22 built at the Kestral yard in Woodbridge by Robertsons. . Originally built in wood from the 1950s until late 1960s, the Kestrel was conceived as a small, inexpensive cruiser suitable for weekend sailing in shallow waters. A wooden centreboard sloop carvel strip plank mahogany hull on oak frames designed by j francis jones, This fine example which is minimal inside and has a good size cockpit. She is perfect for river and estuary cruising or trips.
Rigging - Spruce Mast was replaced a few years ago with a professionally built replacement and a very practical stainless Steel Mast Step which isnt necessarily authentic but enables the mast to be hinged on a secure mount. Stainless Rigging was also replaced. Trailer - is a very solid trailer and works fine - it has had the braking removed but that could easily be added. As per the pictures was moved recently on a flat bed trailer and is still on the road trailer ready to go. Sails - She has Main, Gib and Spinnaker sails in good condition.
Hull - is Mahogany on Oak Beams and beautiful inside. The inside has been stripped except for seats - so comes without any mod cons but could easily be fitted out. Cabin roof and decks are marine ply. See link below for gallery of photos including the interior. Was lifted from the water less than 12 months ago and no leaks but the cabin roof needs some work and generally she could do with painting and antifouling.
Keel - is a lifting keel which is in a keel box - so it is designed for shallow waters with a draft of around .75m when keel is up and probably over 2m with keel down. Interior - There are many original brass fittings including the makers plate. Inside there is the floor and raised sides with hatch covers for seating. To enter cabin there is a sliding hatch and swing doors. Below the step is the mounting place for the original engine.
The yacht is on the tag axle trailer (which is included in the sale) in my backyard at CO5 8HE - ready to trailer away. If you wanted to launch then there is a public hard very near where you can float off the trailer. West Mersea has several boat yards with lifting, storage and services.The Outboard bracket is included fixed on the transom. The outboard you would need is a 6 - 9HP long shaft - which are fairly common and available. She did have an internal engine which was a Stuart Turner 5HP which often come up on classifieds board, I don't have the original.
An outboard is all that's needed to power this boat, which is why a previous owner took out the engine. However, if i were to rebuild her i would try and keep it authentic and install another Stuart Turner.
