Engine(s) Seajoy was given a new lease of life with an Hyundai D170s. I "bit the bullet" and replaced the tired twin Volvo 75hp original engines which gave a top speed of 8knots. The 170hp diesel engine was purchased from Watermota the UK distributor for Hyundai Seasal just over one year ago. It now has 800hours on it. The engine came used as an ex demonstrator but sold with a years warranty (which has just expired).
A new mercruiser B1 sterndrive was purchased at the same time. I am very surprised how lean the D170s runs and what performance it gives. I have never opened the engine up to its recommended max rpm but she will do 22.5 knots at 3,600 rpm. I normally cruise around 2,800 to 3,000rpm at 15knots sea conditions permitting. The engine has been used through last summer around the Solent and through this winter every week without a blink.
Starts everytime on the turn of a key. Worry gone. I will definately buy Hyundai again. The oil change for example can be completed in 15minutes with an electrically operated built in oil pump removing the engine oil from the sump at a touch of a button. There are three in line fuel filters to ensure diesel is delivered clean.
The recommended service for this year has already been done on the engine and sterndrive with new anodes fitted.Construction William Osborne built fast patrol boats and rescue boats for the RNLI. The yard had the experience and ability in design, with high standards of marine engineering practice. The hull is of GRP construction, giving lightweight combined with great strenght. The deep vee hull section and keel enables the "Kingswift" to maintain high speeds in adverse conditions. The attractive vee transom gives manoeuvrability going astern and counteracts the effects of heavy following seas.
The hull was designed to accomodate various sized single or twin engines diesel or petrol 48hp, 70hp 105hp and 160hp engines which at full speed gave 30-35mph. The soft chine formation has a cushioning effect in rough water at speed and a reduction of yawning in a following sea. This meant the spaceous hulls were safely used on quiet rivers, estuaries or open water. Two coats of hard antifoul paint have just been applied to the hull. Accommodation Seajoy is designed to sleep four persons within the cabin.
There is space for another two to sleep in the cockpit area on the bench seat and floor under the canopy (weather permitting). A newly refurbished jabaso toilet is sited in a small toilet area which has two doors for entry from the cockpit or the main cabin. There is a small sink and cupboard therein. The forward bunks have had an extra design feature by way of a further cushion filit which brings the bunks together as a double. The table and bench seats (opposite the gas cooker/oven and gas/electric fridge) fold flat to make a double bunk.
A large cupboard separates both sleeping areas. I have removed the curtains which fade and gather moisture with time and covered the windows with lined burgundy canopy material. This protects the exterior woodwork and excludes all light for a good sleep Equipment I have replaced all the deck cleats with stainless steel replacements and added extra ones with bolts instead of screws where able. I have had the original manually operated winch totally stripped and professionally rebuilt. It is as new.
A new danforth anchor has been re positioned on new stainless steel housings on wooden varnished chocks and lies securely on the fore deck. The pulpit had a design fault with its feet being too small. I had it removed, strengthened and refurbished with larger feet and refitted in stainless steel. All screws renewed in stainless steel where needed. The canopy is in good condition although a little faded.
I have added to the rear clear pane by way of a further cover to prevent pontoon lights shining into the boat and further tailoring to prevent wear to the woodwork and to keep the cockpit water tight. I have had Tec Dek fitted to the the upper decks which retains the vessel's classic looks without the maintenance issues. The boats electrics have also been overhauled. Seajoy now has 8 three pin sockets. 2 usb sockets and a cigarette lighter style socket.
They run off shore power using the appropriate modern trip switch fuse box. Seajoy has a year old heavy duty cranking battery and a large heavy duty leisure battery of the same age. Seajoy D170s heats the boats utility hot water stored in a insulated tank and in cabin heating via a radiator and blower. There is also a covert bulkhead mounted 1kw heater when shore power is connected. A large floor hatch in the cockpit gives to more storage space above the bilges.
A Houdini hatch is above the forward berths and access to the anchor locker is also found on the forward bulkhead. This boat is ready to go, elegant and easy on the eye. A surveyors report was completed for insurance purposes mid 2015 giving a value close to the asking price before any work was undertaken. Thank you for looking. I m happy to answer any questions.
Please ask for Mac and call phone. Seajoy is advertised elsewhere.
