The ‘Why Not’ has features typical of the top-end of the Broom 30 range, and has been carefully maintained to keep them in great condition. From the flybridge driving position, to its twin Perkins engines, sunroof and folding windscreen, the Why Not is a classic of its era with all the comforts you require. At a glance... Designed for comfortable living, river cruising and coastal/estuary journeys, the Mk11 version of the Broom 30 design included a hard top, sliding saloon doors and stern bedroom cabin. Why Not was moored on the River Thames at Shepperton until 1997, when it was bought by the current owner and moved to Benson. The boat has been covered and winterised in dry storage every year, and only used for short breaks each summer, resulting in its great condition. Exterior Full fibreglass in good condition with minor wear to the gel coat consistent with age. The fibreglass has complete integrity, with no osmotic transfer below the waterline.
The hull was anti-fouled in 2009. The windows were removed, cleaned, and resealed at this point. Covers A vinyl deck cover, dodgers, and covers for the spotlights and horn were made in 2008 and are in good condition. The boat is supplied with a full fitted cover for wintering. Kitchen Galley kitchen contains sink with hot and cold water, energy-saving Waeco RS refrigerator, Flavel Vanessa gas cooker with grill, oven and twin hobs.
An original folding teak-veneer panel locks down to provide an extra work surface. Interior Well-preserved original cabinetry and teak veneers. New cushion covers were made in 2014. Original folding tables for the saloon and aft cabin are in excellent condition, as is the generous storage cabinet in the saloon and the large dressing table in the stern cabin. Engines Why Not features twin Perkins 4108 engines, running on diesel.
These are accessed through hatches in the floor of the saloon. Both engines were fully serviced in May 2018. Bathrooms The main bathroom has a sink, shower and chemical WC. A second toilet is en suite to the aft cabin, with a sink and sea toilet (this has been capped for inland waters). Hot and cold running water is provided by the engines and a large storage tank.
Ongoing projects Why Not is sold in working order - it has a safety certificate, tax is paid until 2019, and the engines are in sound condition, serviced by TM Marine on the Thames in May 2018. As with any vintage boat, there are a handful of little jobs that we were aiming to get on with next season, but none are the kind of thing that would prevent you getting going on this lovely boat right away! So here are the few jobs that you could take on as the new owner: 1) Veneer on the lower 18" of cockpit sliding doors needs replacing. These doors could probably benefit from a new rubber seal too. 2) The exterior wood around the cockpit doors would benefit from a sand, fill, and repaint.
3) Some minor electrics projects, such as replacing the old car stereo/speakers, and wiring up the searchlight and depth reader, could be tackled, but they're fairly non-urgent! 4) We took out the old curtains, but replaced all the poles with new aluminium rods. These are ready for you to put up your own curtains or blinds. For more information, photos, videos of the engines running, or to arrange a viewing please contact me. The boat is out of the water for dry storage between November-April, but I can meet you and take the covers off the boat to give you a viewing.
