For Sale Ambassador is a superb motorsailing ketch which has been mainly used as a liveaboard; that said, she handles well under a full sail or just running with the genoa. She is quite unique; she was built in Holland by Hitters-Proost and there is a photo of her just after she was built sporting a spinnaker on their website. She spent some time as a second home in Palma, then travelled the French canals to St Kathrine's haven (London) where she became a pied-a-terre for two different owners. The masts are on tabernacles and will step to clear the canal bridges so she could easily go back to the Med via the canal network. I am Ambassadors fourth owner which is not bad for a 40-year-old girl.
She has been well looked after and I have all the receipts, instructions and documents dating back to when she was new, I even have a copy of the architects plans. I bought her as a liveaboard but also to sail, I searched specifically for a spacious liveaboard which could be solo-sailed, and Ambassador was the only one I found. I had planned to sail Norway, Denmark and the Baltic but my life path has changed which is why Ambassador is now up for sale. She has a powerful 6-cylinder Mercedes engine which produces 165hp and is very economical. She is keel cooled and the exhausts are dry so there is no saltwater heat exchanger or seacocks or pumps to worry about and only minimal maintenance, no faff, just turn the key and go.
She has been fitted with a galvanic isolator and this has significantly reduced maintenance too. She has a powerful bow-thruster with a remote control, so coming alongside and mooring single-handed is dead easy. She has an auto-pilot which will hold a steady course whilst I raise the sails but to be honest, she has a big hydraulic rudder and once set, she holds her course whilst I hoist the mizzen and that keeps the head to wind whilst I lift the main. The genoa is furling and that can be controlled from the aft deck where there is a second wheel, with Vetus hydraulics and a Morse control. On the bow there is a 20kg Danforth anchor, a Lofrans windlass and 60m of 10mm chain in the locker.
On the aft deck there is a spare 15kg kedge. On the davits there is an 8ft fibreglass rowing boat with oars and a 2hp mariner outboard. On the aft deck there is a locker which four-man lifeboat, day shapes and various warps. There are plenty of fenders, plus a horseshoe life ring and light. In fact, there is everything you would need to sail her away as I am not taking anything away with me.
Inside she sleeps 7 Two in the spacious double in the master cabin (aft). One (pilot berth) on the settee in the saloon Two in single bunks in the mid-cabin and two in the V-berth in the forward cabin, an in-fill converts the V-berth into a double. There are two heads, one forward and one aft, the aft (in the master cabin has a shower with mixer tap). The water is heater with mains electricity or from the engine. There is plenty of storage in the aft cabin and some hanging space both fore and aft too.
The deck-saloon is light and airy and like the master cabin, it has colour-changing mood (party) lighting in the deck-head panelling; in the saloon, the lights will dance to the music from the DAB and Spotify enabled radio. A large, comfy corner sofa creates a very relaxing social area. The main navigation is in the deck-saloon with Vetus hydraulic wheel and morse. An Airtronic blown-air heating system circulates air into all the cabins and heads so she is always warm. The galley is equipped with a gimble mounted Plastimo 2500 double ring cooker with grill and oven and above this is an extractor with downlight.
The gas bottles are on the aft deck and there is a gas BBQ on the aft deck too The fridge is 240-volt but will run off the inverter. In the engine room are two 250 litre fresh water tanks, plus one 150 litre waste tank taking waste from the aft heads, compliant with French and Dutch waterways; the main fuel tank holds 900 litres and there is an additional 70 litre diesel 'day' tank. There is a boom tent which covers the aft deck, a pull-out Bimini (sunshade) which fits to the mizzen boom too. There is a winter cover that goes over the foredeck and sun covers for the saloon windows, there is also a winter cover for the butterfly sunlight in the saloon roof. Ambassador has seen very little use as she was a second home in London for much of her life and as a result, she only has 2568 engine hours recorded.
In a car traveling at 40mph, 2568 hours equates to approximately 102,700 miles which is nothing for a big 11 litre engine that was built to power a coach – at an average of 8 knots, this is only 20,544nm As a 40-year-old, she has seen some life but has been well maintained and the last survey (dated 2016) showed the hull thickness to be mainly 5mm which is the original thickness. She was lifted out in May 2019 (last year) and was repainted with Jotun and anti-fouled. The photo of her in the hoist was taken just after she had been lifted and pressure washed, I have to say I was very impressed with her condition and more impressed that the surveyor’s marks were still visible from 2015. Inside, she has been progressively refurbished and modernised throughout. All the head-linings and some of the panelling has been replaced and all the steel above the waterline has been double insulated.
