'Nordlys' Kingfisher 30 MkII, 5/6 berth Bilge Keeled Yacht, sail number 59 for sale. More photos of the inside will be added shortly, I couldn't find any without friends or members of my family. 'Nordlys' has been our home on the sea for over 10 years and is based in Dartmouth, South Devon. She has sailed as far afield as Norway and Holland, and more recently France and the Channel Islands. Her name translates in Norwegian to 'Northern Lights' and was on the front page of 'Yachting Monthly' anchored in a Fjord at Korssund in Norway in 1978, the year she was built, so we assume her first owner was Norwegian.
She has just had her keel anti-fouled, new anodes and her hull painted and was craned into the water at Noss Marina, Dartmouth this May, so she's ready to go for the season. She is our first yacht and fortunately, very forgiving. We have learnt to sail in a deep cockpit and due to her weight, a steady motion at sea, so a very safe feeling yacht. The strength in her hull, decks and standing rigging give you confidence in her abilities. She is equally at home creek crawling due to her 1.1m bilge keels as she is out at sea, a wonderful first boat.
Her crew have been children, grand-children, parents and great-grandparents and she is much loved. The reason for selling is simply a larger boat which will be our next sailing adventure. 3 years ago we fitted a reconditioned Yanmar 3GM30F 3 cylinder fresh water cooled diesel with Kanzaki 2-1 gear box, which gives her an easy cruising speed of 6 knots. Due to no wind, we motored from Dartmouth to Alderney last September, covering 75 miles in 12 hours, so quite acceptable. Both keels have 1/2 tonne of lead in them and are also fuel tanks.
We put in around £40 in each which lasts most of the season. Stainless steel water tank. The reliability of her engine is backed up by her electrics. Three 110amp 12v batteries (1 engine start, 2 domestic) charged by a 55amp Hitachi Alternator through a 'Sterling' power splitter. The constant charge in each battery is shown in two LCD Digital Displays over the chart table.
On deck she has a large furling genoa and battened mail sail with lazy jacks and a cruising chute. Two mast mounted winches for halyards and reefing. Radar reflector, Access hatch with steps. Two port and two starboard cockpit winches for sheets and cruising chute. Her plough anchor with 30m of chain and additional warp gives good holding.
Manual windlass, Autohelm tiller pilot with fluxgate compass +10 or +1 degree adjustment. Her original bulkhead compass shows the same heading as the fluxgate. Standard Horizon chart plotter mounted under spray hood. Dodgers available but not fitted. New engine morse control is easy to use near the tiller.
Stainless gantry mounts GPS and Navtex receivers and spare VHF aerial. Man overboard life sling, danbuoy and horseshoe life buoy with light, jack stays. Stainless boarding ladder at stern. Access hatch in cockpit sole to gear box and stuffing box. Twin cockpit drains.
Access to stern bunks, which frankly we use as storage. Fenders, lines etc. One bunk has been used to house the three 110 amp batteries, hence 5/6 berths. These can be re-sited if required. Stern cabin also houses two gas bottles, regulator and hose currently been replaced.
Companionway steps are easily removed for access to engine. These lead to galley on portside with twin sinks, manual water foot pump, storage, cool box and new gimballed cooker with twin burners, grill and oven, auto gas shutoff on all burners and electric ignition. To starboard, instrument panel with key start, oil pressure and water temperature gauges, battery volt gauges and panel switches for instruments, cabin lighting, nav lighting etc. Large chart table with storage underneath. VHF Radio, Depth sounder, Navtex.
The interior is well worn but comfortable with saloon port and starboard berths LED lighting (main saloon light and over bunk reading lights), teak folding table, storage lockers over each berth. Door separates saloon to companionway to port heads with sink and manual water foot pump, lighting. Wet locker to starboard leading to twin forepeak berths with storage shelving and over bunks, and reading lights. She will be sailed by us until sold and currently fitting new cooker, gas lines and painting her decks, which do need doing at her stern particularly. We painted her 8 years ago with International Interdeck non slip, and Toplac paint which has lasted wonderfully.
She is fantastic value for money and a safe boat. She needs her mast connections looking at, which are the wind speed and angle instrumentation and also her masthead nav light. (LED) Pretty sure these are connection issues. I am happy to take anyone aboard and take her for a spin, but please interested parties only. L.O.A. 30' 0 (9144) L.W.L.
