Built in 1980, Cirrus is a good example of this popular yacht designed and built in Oulton and intended for both Broads and coastal sailing. Rigged as a masthead sloop, she is fitted with a swing keel. She has been re-engined with a 2008, 4-stroke, twin-cylinder, 8 hp Mercury petrol outboard fitted in a cockpit well and with very little use. Inside she has a cleverly designed slide-away galley with single burner hob, giving the lounge area of a much larger boat. Sink. Water tank.

Having learned to sail late in life, I was attracted by her forgiving ways and the fact that she was about the biggest boat - with the most cabin accommodation - that I could handle easily single-handed, without using the winches.

Effectively a large dinghy that won’t capsize - with plenty of cabin space and pretty much standing headroom. She has the added bonus that everything can be done from the cockpit, including furling the mainsail, which can be accomplished in complete safety from the companionway steps. The design includes an ingenious, built-in mast-lowering system, enabling the mast to be raised or lowered single-handed, thus giving easy access to the entire Broads network. She is moored on a rare and highly sought-after, quay-head mooring overlooking one of East Anglia’s great nature reserves, at the end of a lovely pub garden and close to static holiday houseboats, with which it shares the view. Cirrus offers safe, all-year-round sailing.

Somewhere to come for the weekend, sleep aboard and enjoy the social atmosphere of the pub, the views across the Broad from the mooring and the security of one’s own private space. A mobile beach hut / summer house, a Wendy house, a private retreat to read, write, fish or just chill, or a place just to get away from it all and listen to the football in peace! Motor or sail out and moor in the middle of the Broad for a picnic with young, would-be pirates, or drop the mud weight and doze off over a coffee and a book. And all this comes with the bonus of a fascinating hobby and an infinitely challenging (if you want it to be) sporting activity, all rolled into one – and Covid-safe to boot! (Sailing has been classified as legitimate exercise during lockdown.) She is being sold with a full year’s mooring and Broads fees paid paid up until April 2022 with Broads boat safety certificate to July 2023.
