Raider 18 Sailing Dinghy / Day Boat. Similar Hawk 20. Like Big,stable Wayfarer!

Raider 18 sailing dinghy / dayboat. A similar design to the popular Hawk 20, except for this boat’s round bilges. Designer is believed to be Chris Hawkins and built by Porter Brothers. It has a very large forward locker in the bow and two large bench lockers with loads of room for equipment, life jackets, sandwiches etc. It comes with jib, genoa, mainsail and spinnaker.

The main has two reefing points. There is a back stay fitted. The foresails can be furled or reefed with the Harken furlers. There are two forward winches which I have not found it necessary to use and a central winch to aid lifting the heavy swinging keel. The design is such that it allows for spirited sailing whilst retaining good stability.

The cockpit is well designed and allows for plenty of people aboard. Only last week, I sailed with my family – two adults and four kids – on Lake Windermere with plenty of room to sit and with no scared kids – including my two-year old! The boat comes with a sail cover as well as a separate cockpit cover. The trailer is an Indespension, braked, roller coaster, roller trailer with large winch and is in great condition with working brakes, suspension, rollers and recently overhauled hitch. The boat is quite heavy, so a decent tow car is recommended.

As with any boat of this age, (believed to have been built in the late 1990s) there are some surface cracks, the self-bailers are leaky and allow some seepage along under the sole plate, through a drainage pipe to the front compartment where a bailer pump is fitted(apparently from new). Were I keeping the boat, I would be looking at fixing the self-bailers. It requires a new rubber universal joint between tiller extension and tiller.

The sails are in good, clean condition. Please do come and have a look near Chorley, Lancs.
