Wingspan is an Anderson 22, designed by Oliver Lee and built in 1979. A highly commended boat. She has fractional sloop rigging. She has a lifting bulb keel (new keel was fitted in 2013). Quoted by The Good Yacht Guide as a “Tough, well-built and excellent all-round performer as a cruiser/racer.
This model of boat has entered and finished the transatlantic race. A 2020 Practical Boat Owner article rated this boat as one of the best used trailable boats. “the Anderson sails well, is as much fun as s dinghy, but as stable and seaworthy offshore as a cruiser.”“The boats were built well to a generous specification and as such have lasted well”“The Anderson 22’s excellent sailing performance and sea kindly motion was so impressive that three of them took part in the 1977 Plymouth-Antigua race in virtually standard form, with reports of regular 120-mile day runs commonplace.” Not only is this boat a wonderful sea boat she can also be kept on tidal moorings on soft mud. Due to the lifting bulb keel she will sit upright on the mud therefore cheaper to moor. Furthermore her mast can be lowered in transit flush to the coach roof, which makes this boat able to go practically anywhere (the mast step has been strengthened to allow regular lowering of the mast).
I have taken her through the broads and rivers of Norfolk with the low bridges. The stability at sea with all lines being controlled from the cockpit mean she is a safe boat to sail single handed at sea also. See at the bottom of the page for dimensions. Outboard is situated in a well so that it isn’t lifted out of the water when the boat heels over. 4 berths but two adults comfortably, can sleep two adults and two children. 4 hp 4 stroke Tohatsu Outboard service history known and paperwork included, aspen fuel (which doesn't clog the engine when left in the engine like regular fuel does) used engine hasn’t been used since last service after last season.
New forestay and Plastimo rolling furler in 2012. New mainsheet with adjustable track 2011, forestay tang repaired, solar panel trickle charger, windex, Fenders, boat hook, Plastimo compass 2012, clipper log, Nasa depth gage, new barometer 2012, bildge pump taken apart and resealed, new VHF aerial 2013, new standard Horizon DSC VHF radio 2012 (has been disconnected for storage over winter but just needs reconnecting). Dual AGM EP 800 Wh Marine battery, chemical toilet, (perfect for inland waters where the use of a sea toilet is prohibited) main sail cover 2012, single gimbaled meths stove 2012. Removable swim ladder, folding (stored in locker). Instruments board has been installed which comes across enabling use of the cigarette charger socket; there is space to have a tablet with navigation installed.
There is lots of storage on this boat and the layout is well thought out for a small boat. Comes with a trailer that has attachments that can be removed for ease of dropping the keel to paint when on the trailer. The trailer is for boat storage and can be used to launch by waiting for the tide to lift boat off. The trailer does not have suspension and should only be used to store the boat on and for short non-public road distances. I currently have two Anderson 22’s and am not able to afford both hence the sale.
Wingspan is currently on my other road trailer so could be towed to a destination and the other trailer can be towed without the boat. However, delivery is in addition to the price of the boat as the road trailer will need to be returned if this is the desired route of transport. Another option is the boat can be sailed to a destination by the buyer and trailer towed. In addition the boat will need to be either launched at the new location for the trailer to be released or launched to sail, this would be at a cost to the buyer. This is open to discussion to serious buyers.
Current condition of the boat.Boat is on a road trailer and mast disconnected.Hull painted and antifouled over the last few weeks ready for launching.Bow Nav light taken off while on the broads for protection but fully working just needs reconnecting. All electrics working but connections may need cleaning. There is some mirror cosmetic work that could be carried out. Some resealing around fixtures and windows. Would benefit of a coat of deck paint and new windows and cushions but the structure of the hull and the keel are in good condition.
Some areas of rigging in need of attention. The boat is currently in Surlingham, Norfolk. Brilliant family boat to have on the broads or safe boat to sail, even singlehanded, at sea as all sails controlled from cockpit. I have enjoyed sailing this boat single handedly around the East coast of the UK, I have found her a very sturdy safe boat and very versatile. I have enjoyed many adventures coastal and inland and would encourage anyone embarking on a first boat to go with an Anderson.
She sails beautifully at sea, she needs a breeze to get going so is better suited to larger areas of water. The benefit of having the lifting keel means that in shallow waters like the on the East coast where sand bars move it is not so much of a problem and the risk of running aground is minimal.
