Beautiful example of a well maintained and modernised Southerly 28 in excellent condition. I have had this yacht for 10 years now, when I got her she had been well looked after from new. In many ways she had been a little too well looked after in that pretty much everything was original. That's great for things that you can't change like hull keel etc. But there was a number of things that needed replacing simply due to their age, eg.
Running rigging. I have, over the last ten years embarked on a major refit of our yacht, with pretty much every system being replaced and optimised for modern living. It was great to start out with such a well maintained boat, and now the work is done she is a very comfortable place for a family to spend several weeks away from home. Her core specs are as follows: 1978 Southerly 28 made by Northshore Yachts UK.28ft length 9ft beamInboard diesel engineSloop rig with three hanked on headsails and a cruising chuteSwing keel with exceptionally shallow draft with it up ( just 2ft 6' )Forward facing windows - great all round visibility from inside on rainy days.Dries out uprightStanding headroom throughoutShower in heads compartment. I have listed below what we have done in bringing her fully up to date: Fitted brand new 30HP Yanmar inboard diesel engine.Fitted new high grade sound proofing to engine compartmentFitted new stern tube, carbon shaft seal and new stainless prop shaft.Fitted new Flex-o-Fold folding propellerInstalled new fibreglass diesel tankInstalled new Blue Sea breaker electrics panel, with new wiring throughoutInstalled 240v 2KW inverterInstalled AGM batteries with separate engine start battery plus split charge systemInstalled new navigation lights throughout including mastheadInstalled new Eberspacher diesel water heater with Calorifier for shower and kitchen sink hot water.Installed three radiators on Eberspacher water circuit for very effective cabin heatingInstalled Raymarine ST4000 autopilot Installed Raymarine Depth and Speed instrumentationInstalled Raymarine DSC radio plus additional submersible Raymarine hand held DSC radio.Installed Garmin GPSInstalled new chart tableInstalled new fibre glass fresh water tanks, pressure pump and accumulatorInstalled new toilet and all plumbing associated with itInstalled new Plastimo cooker with twin hob, grill and separate ovenInstalled additional "childrens" pipe cot forward.
( in addition to existing 5 berths )Installed two Self tailing two speed Lewmar sheet winches in the cockpit.Replaced the anchor chain with new galvanised chainReplaced all standing rigging and chain platesReplaced all running rigging, halyards, sheets, everything with modern rope.Added a long spinnaker pole for use with the 150% genoa for great broad-reach sailing.Added Vetus davits to the stern for 150kg tender which can be easily removed (2 bolts) if necessary Ok, so what started out as a well cared for five berth Southerly yacht is now a 5 1/2 berth yacht with all the convenience of a modern craft. I am genuinely sad to sell her, but as I now have four fast-growing children she is just getting too small for our family of six. We have sailed over five thousand miles in her around the Western Isles of Scotland in a variety of conditions. We have found her to be a remarkably family friendly boat, with her deep cockpit, sailing fairly upright, handling well in heavy weather ( low end of a force 8 is the maximum we have done although she is classified as RCD Class A - Ocean, so she will take whatever you throw at her. ) She motors smoothly at 5-6 knots and the new engine is lovely and quiet.
The folding propeller has made a huge difference to her sailing performance and we have even won some of the cruiser races around the Isle of Man now she sails so well. I have had her up for sale at £25,000 which is what the last survey valued her at, however I am looking for a quick sale so have drastically reduced the asking price to just £19,950. So I do genuinely believe that she represents a bargain now to any potential buyer. She is registered on the Small Ships Register as "Blow the Wind" and is lying in Peel in the Isle of Man. I have a full suite of photos available to view on the website www.blowthewind.com this domain name would also be included in the sale ( if you want it ) I would be open to offers for a quick sale.
