Capella of Colne - Sail number 82 Designed by Kim Holman and built by Tucker Brown of Burnham-on-Crouch in 1964.The Stella was a very popular design, derived from the Folkboat but slightly bigger all round with more volume and a bigger rig. To this day there is still an active fleet racing on the east coast and they have proven themselves as capable and easily handled pocket cruiser racers. Capella the Stella as I like to call her is obviously in need of some attention but aside from the need of a mast and engine the work required appears minor. She retains many of her original features.2 berths, including 2 pipe cot berths in the forepeak make her ideal for cost effective family cruising and racing. The Stella is just light enough to go on a suitable trailer and be towed on the road giving flexibility on winter storage and generally helping to reduce running costs. While Capella's hull and deck are sound as she has been very well covered and kept dry, the original wooden mast has sadly suffered quite a bit of rot.
I think the mast is perhaps beyond repair so a buyer would need to obtain a secondhand one if possible ( I have looked) or otherwise get a new one made. It's basically two halves of scarfed lengths of wood glued together and rounded on the corners if you fancied having a go yourself. (planed Spruce from Robbins timber would be about 1200 delivered or douglas fir a few hundred less). Another option would be to fit a cut down secondhand aluminium mast although this would not meet class rules for racing in fleet. The rsj launching trailer is not included but will be advertised for sale when the boat has gone.
Theres no engine included but Capella originally had a Yanmar 1GM10 and the engine cradle and propshaft, coupling and prop for that are still present. You'd need to source an engine but I do have access to a very low (six) hours 1GM10 and control panel that could possibly be available separately to the buyer of Capella only(please don't ask re the engine if not buying the boat)Despite being well covered the boat's toe rail and rubbing strake are rotten in just one or two places, a fairly easy job. There is plenty of stripping and revarnishing and painting to be done. You are welcome to come and take a look by arrangement The boat is offered at a low start price with consideration of the mast and engine needed and also transport costs. She would however make a good boat within budget of a fully commissioned Stella to your own spec, a blank canvas. A local boat hauler gave me an estimate to move within Essex around 600She is on a double steering yard trailer (not included in sale) in my front garden and a member of the local sailing club has kindly agreedto use the tractor pull the boat out for loading at the time of transport.
This would need to fit with his availability and avoid club racing days.
