Featured Refinements: Trailer Sailer
This is our fabulous Swift 18' Swing Keel Trailer Sailer from 1983 with trailer and tender and engine. It is in excellent original condition & everything works like it should. 9" draft with keel up so easy to launch & can be sailed right up to the beach/shallows. Swing keel with winch operated lifting mechanism recently greased & checked, We tow it with a Honda Accord 2L so no need for an otherwise pointless 4x4 when towing, Currently located in Teignmouth on its trailer. Has the original sails with "Swift 18" logo on them which are serviceable but jib needs minor outer edge repair. Also has newer set with much bigger jib (150% ?).
No rips or tears or fraying on these though not perfect white any more - some stains. Using the larger jib it sails on a breath so great summer boat. We used the smaller "working" jib in a 30Kn wind recently & it felt perfectly safe. Above that you should head for port. Even if swamped.
The Swift wouldn't sink due to it's closed cell foam bouyancy chambers. Standing rigging is excellent but no idea when it was replaced, may be original. All halyards sheets etc are in good shape, some new some not so. 2 point reefing on main, furling jib with all lines back to cockpit. 2 winches on deck for jib, though not really needed.
Anchor with chain, some other ropes for mooring etc.. Mast raising frame (works with the winch) Cabin is bone dry. Hatch & windows do not leak, Hull & keel in great condition, some minor chips to gel coat on corners but no cracks or crazing anywhere. Will be freshly antifouled before sale. Interior all original. V Berth up front & 2 more on either side.
Upholstery is really clean in dark red material. No rips tears or mildew current or historic. Has the original table which is a masterpiece of engineering - reminiscent of an old VW Camper van. I have recently added a 12V Battery with solar panel charger for Depth Sounder, 12V outlet and USB charge points. This is all mounted on a piece of lightweight ply with long wires because I wasn't sure where it would be most useful so wanted it moveable to try different locations before deciding.
Has original twin Gas Hob, sink with manual pumped tap. Fire Extinguisher, Kettle. 8 teabags, half a jar of sugar and some jammy dodgers, Engine is a Suzuki 2Hp 2 stroke which runs great & starts first time. We use it both on tender and yacht where it sits in an outboard well. Recent carb clean, new fuel filter, new impeller & spark plug.
Rinsed after every outing. Hull speed on a Swift is round 5 knots & this engine is perfectly adequate for that purpose, more engine would make more noise but not go any faster unless you add 150Hp & get it to plane. If you're in a rush then sailing is not for you. The tender is a Bombard AX300 & has a hard transom and inflatable floor. It is old, has had some floor seams reglued, 2 small patches & doesn't leak.
Quick to assemble because of the airdeck floor & quite light for its size, Easily fits in small car boot or on the roof. The trailer is galvanised steel, single axle & braked. Hand Winch & side arms make launching & recovery a doddle. Was serviced 2 years ago & some bits replaced - the front tow ball part which also operates the brakes, winch + cable and rollers on side arms. I tested brakes & greased bearings before lifting the boat last week & rinsed the whole thing after hauling both at the ramp then again at home.
We moored in Teignmouth Harbour for around £450 PA or you could launch & set up each time. Happy to split the sale into parts - I really like both the Bombard tender and the Suzuki engine because although ancient they are lightweight and indestructable so will knock £200 off for each of these £400 total if you want neither. Decide when you see them. I would be happy with £2600 for boat & trailer, £3000 for the lot. Will throw in a couple of life jackets, mooring ropes & a boat hook too if full price achieved.
We have a new larger boat but not in a rush to sell as the new one is now in dry dock until March so the Swift will still get used when the sun shines. I think my dad quite likes it on his drive anyway ! Boat will stay advertised until I get a decent deposit in my bank acct. Payment by Cash or Transfer or Paypal or whatever suits.
