Boat Type: Cabin Cruiser
Featured Refinements: Cruiser
Twin Screw Cruiser. Boat Project Offshore. Coastal. River Cruiser. This lovely 28’ twin engine cruiser was built by the prestigious yard of F.C.Mitchell & Sons of Poole in Dorset. Built around 1959/60.
Described by the builder as a ‘Twin Screw Gentleman’s Cruiser’ she is a real classic with beautiful lines and distinctive large saloon windows. Constructed of teak over oak with mahogany topsides. Structurally in very sound condition with the hull in remarkably good order. It is carvel built with hard splines. The topsides required attention, particularly the starboard side and this has been brought to near completion.
New saloon sides and windscreen have been remade using top class African mahogany. The new wheelhouse/cockpit roof is multi layer ply and GRP with an epoxy cotton top layer. The front saloon window is new in mahogany with two hopper style openers. Currently all new parts are ‘dry fit’ prior to final fixing. There is still work to do but nothing beyond the capability of a fair handyman.. This would include the replacement of some parts of the Port side saloon and wheelhouse.
Fairing and painting of the hull. Obviously recaulking below the waterline. The interior is in pretty good order with only the galley area removed, because it was too big. The previous owner lived aboard. There is a ‘character’ sea toilet with large holding tank.
There is also a large capacity fresh water tank. There are auto; bilge pumps installed and a manual pump in the transom locker. I will include in this listing sufficient top quality mahogany timber to complete the refurbishment. The engines are 2 x BMC OHV Vedette’s with Stewart Turner gearboxes. Both engines were running perfectly until layup so will only need servicing and recommissioning, but they are, after all Morris Minor engines so parts are easy to obtain and working on them is a doddle!
And whisper quiet compared to diesel. There are twin stainless steel fuel tanks and all engine ancillaries were fine. Hull speed is given as 6 knots cruising and 8 knots max. As this lovely boat was complete and sea worthy before layup all ancillaries are included with this listing. These include mahogany mast, Nav’ Lights, VHF Radio, Depth Sounder.
GPS Navigation System. Etc. Also the stainless steel grab rails, pulpit rail, anchor with some 30 metres of chain and anchor windlass. I have the relevant manuals and instructions for the electronic equipment and manuals and parts lists for the engines and gearboxes. I am selling this boat as I have age and health issues that mean I am very unlikely to finish it to the standard I expect of myself. Please note that I have described this boat as honestly as I am able but I cannot offer any guarantees.
Please consider this before bidding. Any inspection is welcomed by arrangement. All in all a great opportunity to finish and own a beautiful classic cruiser. If you have any questions please message me. . Currently on the hard near Beccles on the Suffolk/Norfolk borders.
The boat weighs around 5 ton so transport is not difficult; a local firm moved it for me with a truck and hiab type crane. The cradle under the boat is fixed to it so goes up with the boat making the process pretty straightforward. Thank you for your interest.
