Windy 9800, Volvo Penta Diesel Powered Offshore Cruiser. 2007 Engines & Drives.

Windy boats are excellent quality and well-designed offshore cruisers for those that don't know. The emphasis being on good handling, smooth ride and enjoying the sunny days. However, they are good seaworthy designs which cope well if it gets rough. Not noted for vast accommodation for length, but this one still has 4 berths in two cabins and a galley area and a full hood covering a large open cockpit.Rapier has been lucky enough to have had two new Volvo Penta 5 cylinder circa 190hp diesels and outdrives fitted in 2007. Since then the engines have been maintained and both start and run very nicely.

Still less than 500 hours on them.Layout for living and accommodation favours the outdoor life but as you go down into the main cab you enter a galley area with a loo compartment and the door to the aft cabin off to the right. The main cab has a seating area and table which doubles up into a double berth if required. Loads of reasonable condition cushions for inside and out.I bought Rapier as an opportunistic buy back in the middle of the summer last year. She had had a full service and then not been used for a year as the previous owner bought a bigger Windy. I got her lifted, checked over and cleaned off.

There were a few minor things wrong like a outdrive lift indicator issue and damaged starboard props with a bit of emulsification in the oil on the starboard drive. I had the oil changed on the drive and they got the drive lift working for me. Engine wise was ok, oil clean, just needed a top up on the power steering oil. Later I suspected the batteries were not great so I bought two 100 amp hr marine batteries as a backup just in-case. I took her out on several small runs to check her out then we took her on a cruise west for circa 60 nautical miles to Plymouth close along the coast on a fantastic sunny day.

It was a bit rough mostly due to tidal races but as you would expect, Rapier gave a fantastic smooth and dry ride through the lot at circa 22 knots cruising (flat out circa 30 knots). Since then, I intended to move her round closer to home (North Devon) but weather and lack of time meant it didn't happen. Finally I got her lifted in Plymouth, cleaned, antifouled and blocked down for the winter. I recently bought a pair of good second hand replacement props for the Starboard side but haven't fitted them.There is a plotter/nav unit in good order and a depth sounder. There is a sum log but the impeller prop has gone.

Below there is a DVD player and flatscreen plus radio. On the stern there are davits and an inflatable which has attachments to suit so I will let that go with her.To sum up, she is a top notch relatively economic fast off shore cruiser with two relatively new engines. Not much to do to get her ready for the season.
