Shetland 570 “Aphrodite” – currently moored afloat at Neyland Marina, Pembrokeshire. Aphrodite was build number 2987 – completed late 1979. Original gelcoat in great condition. She is powered by the bullet proof Honda BF50 (1994 model). Two fuel tanks.
Single 12 volt battery. The engine had a new gearbox and propeller in 2019 and has just been fully professionally serviced by Dale Sailing. I purchased Aphrodite in June 2019 and undertook a refit and a series of improvements and additions. I am only selling now as I have decided to return to a sailing yacht. Navigation and Electrics Specification: Garmin Echomap Plus CV65 and Transom Mount Down View Transducer all fitted 2019.
Icom fixed VHF radio and aerial. Plastimo Offshore Compass new 2019. New equipment fitted in 2019: Gebo cabin hatch to replace Houdini original; auxiliary engine bracket; stainless boarding ladder; flag staff socket with ensign and staff; tonneau cover in grey (older red cover included – needs cleaning and small repair); Nordik style deck cleats all round; folding cleats midships; fenders and warps; anchor and warp, and a gorgeous teak steering wheel. Most electrics were rewired in 2019 with marine grade tinned wire. A particular feature of the boat is the new spray hood shown in the photographs which was commissioned from Ratseys Sailmakers and makes her a great boat for spray and rainy conditions.
The main woodwork in the cabin has been replaced with marine grade ply and teak finishes. There is teak effect cushioned flooring in the cabin. I have replaced many fixings which were not marine grade with A4 stainless (such as all the fittings on the windscreen). Aphrodite was lifted out of the water in October and spent 6 weeks on the hard while the engine was serviced, the transducer was installed, the deck fittings, stern bracket and boarding ladder were fitted and she was polished and antifouled. She is good for the coming season.
An original plastic skin fitting was replaced with a metal one at the same time. The only item not addressed so far in the refit is the cabin upholstery. It is serviceable but there is an area where water has caused a hardening of the material at one point and it was the next job on my list! There is a new helm seat in blue. The cockpit upholstery is in very good condition with only a few small areas where age is showing.
The galley is not fitted as I use a self contained gas ring and a separate basin as these can be moved into the cockpit for cooking and washing up when the weather is good. A cooker and a sink could be fitted by a new owner. There is galley storage under the port locker. There is no fitted toilet but there is a designed space for a porta potti between the berths should you wish to carry one. This is a great day boat or weekender and particularly good for fishing as the side benches will fold in to provide even more deck space.
She is stable at anchor. She planes easily and cruises nicely around 15-18 knots and will max out at around 22 knots. Bigger engines will make these boats go faster (obviously!) but these are comfortable and achievable speeds. Aphrodite is 40 years old so is not a new boat but is in remarkably good condition. There are a couple of small areas where the gel coat is faded but these are very minor.
Having previously owned a new model Merry Fisher, I am impressed with how solid she feels in a sea in comparison with a modern boat. I did remove the auxiliary engine (a good 4 stroke Mercury 5HP) as my philosophy is to have a well maintained main engine and not rely upon an engine that is only called upon in an emergency. I plan to get it serviced to use on my new boat, but if I get the asking price for Aphrodite I will include it in the sale. Terms of sale. Viewing – the boat is afloat in Neyland Marina so unless you berth there, there is no unaccompanied access.
I am happy to arrange a viewing with you at a mutually convenient time. All payments are to be by bank transfer only. The boat will only be released, and keys handed over when I am in receipt of cleared funds. The sale will be evidenced by an RYA Bill of Sale Form. If you wish to have a survey that is absolutely fine but you will be responsible for arranging to have the boat moved to Dale Sailing where they can lift out (cost around £35 each way payable to Neyland Marina) and for the cost of lifting, chocking and storage whilst the boat is at Dale Sailing.
A 10% deposit will be payable before the boat can be taken for survey. If you wish to buy sight unseen and/or having viewed and agreed a purchase wish to have the boat lifted for transport I will meet the cost of moving the vessel to Dale Sailing where this can be done. This is a private sale without warranty as to the condition of the boat, her engine or equipment. There is a video of the engine running and a view from the outside and cockpit and the service sheet available - contact me for these. Thank you for looking.
