The Boat This Shetland Saker 18ft (19ft including bathing platform), is happy as river use or sea use and is very capable in rough sea, this model was very well built, and these are extremely strong hulls. The Engine/Heart of any boat The engine in any boat is a critical factor of any boat purchase, get it wrong and you can be left stranded at sea with a big repair bill, remember there is no AA Service at sea, and you can't push a boat home.Engine choice, there are two types of boat engine, Outboard and Inboard engines. Inboard Engines have a money pit piece of equipment called an outdrive that needs constant maintenance that sits in the water all the time, while the main engine is housed tightly inside the boat (hence why so many inboard engines are not maintained, due to accessibility issues. Outboards sit on the rear of the boat, and sit out of the water when not in use. Modern outboards are far more reliable and cost effective than inboard engines, hence why in the US most boats up to 40ft are now outboard powered. However, there are two types of outboard engine, Two Stroke And Four Stroke.Two Stroke Engines run at high RPM and are noisy uneconomical very very smoky and generally unreliable, and are a very old technology, you have to mix the fuel with oil (an art in itself) get it wrong and you can easily damage the engine. Four Stoke Engines (like a car) are far more quiet, stronger, reliable and fuel efficient. She is powered by a very very fuel efficient fuel injected Johnson/Suzuki 50hp Four stroke engine with power trim and tilt, that runs like a sewing machine (no troublesome carburettors to worry about). Trailer The trailer is a braked Factory Built, Galvanised Indespension roller trailer, having a roller trailer it is an easy boat to launch unlike bunked trailers, where the boat sticks to the trailer on launching and recovery.The winch is a two gear type making winching on a lot more easy.
